When a patient arrives with severe injuries, every minute between emergency assessment, diagnosis, surgery and critical care matters.

At Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital, the long-awaited Trauma Centre is moving closer to completion, bringing specialised emergency and critical care services under one roof.

Once operational, the facility will house two operating theatres, 14 Intensive Care Unit beds, 12 High Dependency Unit beds, a radiology centre, laboratory, and pre- and post-operative wards, alongside other specialised trauma services.

For our patients, particularly victims of road crashes, severe burns and other life-threatening injuries, this will mean faster access to specialised care and fewer referrals elsewhere.

Revived through collaboration between Governor Susan Kihika’s administration and the National Government after years of stalled construction, the project will further strengthen NCRTH’s role as a regional referral centre.

Every Pint Counts: We marked the 'Run for Her' with a Blood Donation Drive to prevent postpartum haemorrhage.

Postpartum haemorrhage can claim a mother's life within minutes of childbirth, and in Kenya, it is the leading cause of maternal deaths, accounting for up to 45% of cases. Often, what stands between survival and loss is simple: blood, available and ready.

Today, that urgency drew our staff, partners, and community into the streets for the EndPPH Foundation's "Run for Her," closing with a blood donation drive right here at NCRTH. Every unit collected strengthens our ability to respond when a mother needs it most.

This is what readiness looks like, not just in theory, but on the shelf, in the fridge, ready for the next emergency delivery.

A two-day learning exchange at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH) has highlighted practical ways of making hospital care more organised and responsive to patients.

The team from Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi County took particular interest in how NCRTH prepares patients for surgery, with theatre teams planning from the day before and ensuring a smooth handover between night and day shifts. The approach helps minimise delays and supports a seamless patient journey from preparation to theatre.

The visit also allowed the two hospitals to share experiences on systems that support quality care, with both teams identifying practices that can be adapted to strengthen services for patients.

The exchange reinforces the Department of Health’s commitment to continuous learning and improving the systems behind patient care. Under the leadership of H.E. Governor Susan Kihika, Nakuru County continues to strengthen healthcare services with the patient at the centre of its efforts.

For a patient undergoing cancer treatment, coordinated services, skilled specialists and timely access to diagnostics can make a significant difference throughout the care journey.

We hosted a National Cancer Institute (NCI) team led by Chairman Dr. Timothy Olweny for discussions on strengthening cancer services at NCRTH.

The team toured our Regional Cancer Centre and Nakuru Hospice, reviewing services, equipment and opportunities to strengthen specialised staff capacity.

Our Hospital Director, Santosh Devaraj, sought NCI support for advanced training of personnel, particularly teams operating specialised cancer equipment. Discussions also highlighted better integration of Social Health Authority (SHA) and laboratory services to support continuity of care.

We welcome continued collaboration that strengthens our capacity to provide quality, specialised cancer care to patients from Nakuru and beyond under the leadership of H.E. Governor Susan Kihika.

We have received over 1,600 cartons of pharmaceuticals to strengthen the availability of essential medicines for patients seeking care at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital.

The hospital-procured consignment is the first phase of our pharmaceutical supplies for the 2026/2027 financial year, with a second delivery expected next month.

Our Chief Pharmacist, Dr. Lydia Giturwa, says the supplies will help address availability gaps and support continuity of treatment as demand for services grows.

We continue working to ensure our patients can access the medicines and quality care they need, in line with Governor Susan Kihika’s agenda for "Healthcare for all".

Every clean ward, theatre, corridor and patient-care space contributes to safer care. At NCRTH, the teams responsible for keeping these spaces clean are therefore an important part of patient safety.

We recently equipped 84 hospital cleaners with practical skills through a three-day training on hospital cleanliness, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), occupational safety and healthcare waste management.

Facilitated by our Public Health Officers, the training covered cleaning standards, personal hygiene, correct use of personal protective equipment, safe handling of detergents and disinfectants, and proper waste segregation and disposal.

Through demonstrations and interactive sessions, our cleaners also shared experiences and challenges encountered in their daily work.

As we strengthen services under Governor Susan Kihika’s health agenda and the leadership of Hospital Director Santosh Devaraj, we recognise that quality healthcare goes beyond clinical treatment. A safe patient environment begins with getting the basics right, every day.

For every mother giving birth and every newborn requiring specialised care, quality depends on strong clinical teams, reliable support services and continuous improvement.

We hosted a team from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), led by Dr. Hussein, to assess progress in maternal and newborn care.

During the visit, the team noted the hospital’s motivated healthcare workforce, laboratory and pharmacy support, expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) capacity and Kangaroo Mother Care programme.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to review areas for continued quality improvement in maternal and neonatal services.

Under Governor Susan Kihika’s health agenda and the leadership of Hospital Director Santosh Devaraj, NCRTH continues strengthening systems and services that support safer care and better outcomes for mothers and newborns.
