Prayer, Compassion and Hope for Patients at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital

Healing is about more than medicine. It is also about hope, compassion and the reassurance that no patient walks their journey alone.

Patients at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital on sunday received spiritual encouragement during a pastoral visit by the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, led by Vicar General Rev. Fr. George Munyaka. The visit included the celebration of Holy Mass followed by visits to hospital wards, where the clergy prayed with patients, comforted families and offered words of hope to healthcare workers serving on the front line.

Hospital Director Mr. Santosh Devaraj thanked the Diocese for its longstanding partnership with the hospital, noting that faith-based organizations play an important role in supporting patients emotionally and spiritually alongside the medical care they receive. He also congratulated Rt. Rev. Cleophas Oseso, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, on his appointment as Chairman of the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS), wishing him God's guidance in his new responsibilities.

As a symbol of the enduring partnership, the hospital presented the Diocese with a portrait bearing a message of appreciation, while hospital leadership and the visiting clergy planted trees within the hospital compound, representing hope, healing and a shared commitment to nurturing healthier communities.

Recovery from serious illness requires more than medical treatment—it also depends on proper nutrition. Patients receiving specialised care at Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH) are set to benefit from a donation of 1,200 tins of therapeutic nutritional feeds from Nairobi Pharmaceuticals, helping strengthen nutritional support for some of the hospital's most vulnerable patients.

The specialised feeds will support patients undergoing cancer treatment, recovering from major surgery, burns, severe injuries, and other critical illnesses, as well as those who rely on feeding tubes to receive adequate nutrition during treatment.

Adequate nutritional support plays a vital role in healing by improving recovery, reducing complications, supporting the body's response to treatment, and helping patients regain their strength.

Receiving the donation, Hospital Director Mr. Santosh Devaraj thanked Nairobi Pharmaceuticals for partnering with the hospital to improve patient care.

Death of a mother when giving birth to a new life can probably be termed as one of the saddest occurrences. In recognition to this, the County leadership dedicates its time to evaluate on mechanisms to reduce maternal deaths and today was one of those special days.

Doctors , nurses, midwives, paediatricians and other stakeholders convened at the county's largest healthcare facility Nakuru Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH) under the leadership of the Hospital Director Mr. Devaraj Santosh. The participants discussed various methodologies that help suppress maternal deaths one of the them being proper Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).

Speaking during the convention, Mr. Santosh commended the various teams for the visible improvement in reduction of deaths during births and for the efforts that each healthcare worker takes to improve the care of services provided. He reaffirmed that the leadership of the hospital is to make the hospital a safe haven where generations can trace their good stories of origin.

To encourage the healthcare workers further, partners from Nest 360 Foundation led by Hannah Mwaniki reassured the facility that they will continue to assist empowering the workers, equip the facility and improving quality of services in the centre as it has been their norms. Nakuru is among the counties leading in provision of quality healthcare, she added. Madam Mwaniki is the foundation's Monitoring,Evaluation and Learning/Quality Improvement Manager ( MEL/QI).

Nakuru County government is at the frontline to reduce tragic occurrences during childbirth and treatment by delivering quality healthcare as a way of responsible leadership owing to the fact that access to quality services is a human right, not a privilege.

Under the leadership of H.E. Governor Susan Kihika, Nakuru County continues to strengthen access to quality healthcare by promoting safe and reliable blood donation services through the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH) Blood Donor Unit.

Led by Hospital Director Mr. Santosh Devaraj, together with a dedicated team of healthcare professionals and volunteer blood donors, the recent blood donation drive successfully collected numerous bags of blood, reinforcing the county's blood supply and ensuring that more patients have access to this lifesaving resource when they need it most.

Every unit of blood donated has the power to save up to three lives. It supports emergency surgeries, mothers experiencing childbirth complications, trauma and accident victims, children with severe anaemia, cancer patients, and many others whose survival depends on timely access to blood.

The success of this blood donation exercise reflects the generosity and compassion of residents who stepped forward to make a difference. Every bag collected represents hope for a patient, relief for a family, and another opportunity to save a life.

Together, we are building a healthier Nakuru by ensuring that no patient is denied the chance to live because blood was unavailable.

Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital is strengthening its long-standing partnership with the Catholic Church ahead of a special pastoral visit scheduled for 26th July 2026, when the Bishop will celebrate Holy Mass and spend time with patients.

During a planning meeting led by Hospital Director Mr. Santosh Devaraj, the hospital acknowledged the Church's unwavering commitment to supporting patients through regular pastoral visits, prayers, counselling, and acts of charity.

Every Thursday, Catholic faithful visit patients in the psychiatric ward to offer spiritual encouragement and donations, while every fourth Sunday of the month they reach out to patients across the hospital with meals, companionship, and words of hope.

Every skilled healthcare professional begins with an opportunity to learn, serve, and grow under the guidance of experienced mentors.

We have welcomed 116 Clinical Officer interns who reported for orientation ahead of their formal induction later this week, marking the beginning of an important chapter in their professional journey.

The interns were introduced to the hospital's systems, values, and expectations as they prepare to work alongside multidisciplinary teams in delivering patient-centred care while gaining practical clinical experience.

They join 27 Medical Officer, Dental Officer, and Pharmacist interns who were inducted last week and have already commenced their internship at the hospital.
