Network marketing (also called multi-level marketing – MLM) is a business model where a company sells products or services through people instead of shops, and those people earn money in two main ways:
1. By selling products directly
2. By recruiting others and earning a commission from their sales
Let me break it down clearly 👇
1. How network marketing works
You join a company as an independent distributor.
You buy or use the product
You sell it to others and earn a profit
You can also invite others to join the business
When they sell, you earn a percentage (commission) from their sales
This creates a “network” of distributors — hence the name network marketing.
2. How people make money
Income usually comes from:
Retail profit – selling products at a higher price than you bought them
Bonuses/commissions – from the sales made by people you recruited
Leadership bonuses – if your team grows and performs well
👉 Important: Real money should come from product sales, not just recruiting.
3. Common products used
Most MLM companies deal with:
Health & wellness products
Cosmetics & skincare
Supplements
Household products
Financial or digital services
The product is the backbone of a legitimate network marketing business.
4. Network marketing vs pyramid schemes
This is where many people get confused.
Legitimate network marketing:
Focuses on selling real products
Earnings depend on sales
No guaranteed income
Legal in many countries
Pyramid schemes (illegal):
Focus mainly on recruitment
Little or no real product
Money comes from new members’ fees
Collapses quickly
⚠️ If you’re told “just recruit and get rich fast,” that’s a red flag.
5. Advantages of network marketing
Low start-up cost
No need for a shop
Flexible working hours
Can be started part-time
Builds sales and communication skills
6. Challenges and realities
Income is not guaranteed
Requires consistency and patience
Many people quit early
Success depends on personal effort and team performance
Can strain relationships if done aggressively
Most people who succeed treat it like a real business, not a shortcut.
7. Is network marketing good for you?
It may suit you if:
You like selling and talking to people
You are patient and disciplined
You can handle rejection
You are willing to learn marketing skills
It’s not ideal if you expect quick money without work.
