We Are Building for Children We Haven’t Met Yet.

Much of what we do today will serve children we do not yet know.

They are not on our current lists.
Their families have not reached out.
Their stories are still unfolding somewhere in this community.

And yet, we build.

We build classrooms that will accommodate mobility aids.
We design spaces that reduce sensory overwhelm.
We think through staffing, training, and sustainability.
We prepare systems that will outlive individual emergencies.

Because responsible requires foresight.

It is easy to respond when a need is visible.
It takes vision to prepare before the need arrives.

Githima Special School is not only for the children we currently support.
It is for the child who will be born next year.
For the family who will receive a diagnosis they did not expect.
For the caregiver who will search quietly for a place that understands.

Our work is rooted in this belief:
Every child deserves dignity, preparation, and opportunity — even before we know their name.

That is the kind of future we are building toward.

And that is why we build carefully.

Words shape how we see people.

In our work, we are intentional about saying “a child with a disability” rather than “a disabled child.”

Why does this matter?

Because a child is a child first.

Disability is one part of their experience—it does not define their identity, their potential, or their worth.

When language puts the condition before the person, it subtly reduces someone to a diagnosis. Over time, that shapes attitudes, expectations, and even opportunities.

Person-first language reminds us that:

- Children are not their medical reports
- Families are not their struggles
- Individuals are not their limitations

They are sons and daughters. Learners. Dreamers. Citizens. Image-bearers. Human beings.

This may seem small—but in disability work, small shifts in language create large shifts in culture.

At Githima, dignity begins with how we speak—and how we speak shapes how we serve.

This week, we mourn the loss of a grandmother, a teacher, and a truly warm soul - Mrs. Mary Wairimu Kinyungu.

During one of our home visits last year, we had the privilege of spending a day with her and her family. She welcomed us with kindness, grace, and a quiet strength that left a lasting impression on our hearts.

Beyond being the mother of one of our beneficiaries, she was also a teacher to our Director, Mary Waturi Kiriaku, during her early years of education—a reminder of how lives intertwine and how impact carries forward in ways we may never fully see.

Her love for her family, her dedication as an educator, and the warmth she extended to everyone around her will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time. May they find comfort in cherished memories, strength in community, and peace in knowing her life touched many.

We stand with you in this moment of loss.
