The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health visited the Kenya Institute of Primate Research (KIPRE) on 22 July 2026 to engage with the Institute on strengthening research and innovation in public health.
The discussions focused on key national health priorities, including snakebite envenoming, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Tropical and infectious diseases, Reproductive Health and One Health with emphasis on the critical role of research in addressing these emerging and persistent public health challenges.
The 12-member parliamentary delegation was led by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Dr. James Nyikal, accompanied by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Patrick Munene. The KIPRE delegation was led by the Board Chairman, Prof. Josephat Mulimba, together with members of the Board, the Director General and CEO, Dr. Peter Mwethera, and the Institute's senior management team.
During the visit, the Committee toured KIPRE's research laboratories and animal research facilities, where they were briefed on the Institute's ongoing biomedical research programmes as well as KIPRE Products including smugel and smuscan. The Members also witnessed the extraction of venom from the highly venomous black mamba, a critical process in the development of the East African-specific snake antivenom currently being spearheaded by KIPRE.
The Committee commended the Institute for its contribution to advancing biomedical research and innovation in Kenya and reaffirmed the importance of sustained Government support for research institutions in addressing the country's evolving health challenges.

Kenya Institute of Primate Research - KIPRE, under the guidance of The Ministry of Health, today held an inaugural meeting with officials from Nairobi Enterprises Limited (NEL) to initiate the development of an East Africa-specific snake antivenom.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration in research and development, with key discussions centering on improving the efficacy, safety and quality of the antivenom currently available in the market, as well as advancing the development of a region-specific product to address the burden of snakebite envenoming in East Africa.
KIPRE was led by its Director General, Dr. Peter Mwethera, while Nairobi Enterprises Limited was represented by its Managing Director, Mr. Rajan Dhanani.
The partnership marks an important milestone in Kenya's efforts to enhance local production of life-saving biological products and underscores the commitment of both institutions to advancing scientific innovation, improving public health outcomes, and ensuring access to effective antivenom for communities across the region.

Kenya Institute of Primate Research - KIPRE was privileged to host the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, on 14th July 2026 for a familiarization visit and engagement on the Institute's research agenda.
During the visit, Prof. Abdulrazak commended KIPRE for its cutting-edge biomedical research and its significant contribution to advancing scientific innovation in Kenya. He acknowledged the Institute's growing role in addressing national and regional health challenges through research and emphasized the urgent need for increased investment and funding in research and innovation.
Welcoming the Principal Secretary, KIPRE Chief Executive Officer Dr. Peter Mwethera underscored the vital role of research in improving public health and driving national development. He highlighted the Institute's ongoing efforts to develop innovative health solutions, including the planned launch of the first East African-specific snake antivenom, a landmark achievement expected to enhance the management of snakebite envenoming across the region.
As part of the visit, Prof. Abdulrazak toured KIPRE's research laboratories and witnessed the Institute's highly skilled scientists safely extracting venom from live snakes. He was briefed on how the venom is carefully collected and processed as a critical raw material in the development of the first East African-specific snake antivenom. The Principal Secretary commended the expertise of KIPRE's scientists and recognized the significance of this groundbreaking work in strengthening the region's capacity to respond to snakebite envenoming using locally developed solutions.
Dr. Mwethera further showcased KIPRE's diverse research portfolio, which includes studies on malaria, the One Health approach that integrates human, animal and environmental health and cancer research aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
KIPRE remains committed to conducting world-class biomedical research and developing innovative technologies that improve the health and well-being of Kenyans and the global community.
