๐ฃ Hantavirus
โ Hantavirus is a rare but serious viral infection mainly spread through infected rodents like rats and mice.
โ The virus can be present in rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated dust.
โ People usually get infected when they clean or stay in places where infected rodents have been present, especially closed or poorly ventilated areas.
๐ฃ How does it spread?
โ Breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine or droppings
โ Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes
โ Rodent bites, though this is less common
โ Human-to-human spread is very rare and mainly reported with Andes virus in South America among close contacts.
๐ฃ Early symptoms
โ Fever
โ Headache
โ Muscle pain
โ Tiredness
โ Nausea or vomiting
โ Abdominal pain
๐ฃ Warning signs
โ Cough
โ Shortness of breath
โ Chest tightness
โ Low blood pressure
โ Severe weakness
โ Signs of kidney problems in some cases
๐ฃ Why is it dangerous?
โ In some people, hantavirus can quickly affect the lungs and heart, causing a serious condition called hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome.
โ In some regions, it can also affect the kidneys and blood vessels, causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.
๐ฃ Treatment
โ There is no specific cure for hantavirus infection.
โ Treatment is mainly supportive care in the hospital.
โ Early medical care, oxygen support, ICU monitoring, and management of lung, heart, or kidney complications can improve survival.
๐ฃ Prevention
โ Keep homes and workplaces clean
โ Seal holes where rodents can enter
โ Store food properly
โ Avoid dry sweeping rodent droppings
โ Wet contaminated areas before cleaning
โ Wear protection while cleaning rodent-infested spaces
โ Wash hands properly after cleaning
๐ฃ When to seek urgent medical help?
โ If fever, body pain, vomiting, or weakness happens after possible rodent exposure
โ If symptoms are followed by cough, breathlessness, dizziness, or severe weakness
โ Breathing difficulty after rodent exposure should be treated as an emergency
