🚨 Red flags parents ignore (but really shouldn’t)
As a pediatric rheumatologist, I see kids come in all the time after parents waited too long. Here are 4 signs that mean it’s time to call your doctor, not wait it out:
1. Persistent vomiting or not drinking
If your child can’t keep fluids down or is refusing to drink, dehydration can set in fast. Don’t wait more than a few hours, especially in young children.
2. Rash with fever
Most rashes are harmless but a rash that appears alongside a fever is a different story. It can signal infections, autoimmune conditions, or something that needs urgent care. Always get it checked.
3. Extreme fatigue / not acting normal
You know your child. If they’re unusually limp, unresponsive to play, or just “off” in a way you can’t explain, trust your gut. That kind of fatigue is not just tiredness.
4. Extreme fatigue / not acting normal
A child who seems confused, overly drowsy, or just isn’t themselves after a fever or illness needs to be evaluated.
Your instincts as a parent are one of the most powerful diagnostic tools there is. When something feels wrong, it usually is.
