Results of “makeover” skin treatments.

This patient had no significant acne previously. After undergoing multiple pre-wedding skin procedures and facials, she developed severe acne eruptions.

Unfortunately, we are seeing many similar cases.

Dear makeover artists and beauticians — we truly appreciate the work you do in making brides look beautiful and confident. However, when medical skin problems arise, please avoid giving unscientific advice or attempting to manage conditions beyond your expertise.

Acne, allergic reactions, steroid-induced eruptions, irritant dermatitis, and post-procedure complications require proper medical evaluation and treatment.

Early referral to a dermatologist is important. Delayed treatment can increase the risk of permanent acne scars and pigmentation, which are often difficult and expensive to treat.

Little information about skin cancer

இன்று கிளினிக் வந்த இந்த 17 வயது சிறுமியின் கைகளை ஒரு நிமிடம் கவனமாகப் பாருங்கள்…

வயதுக்கு ஒத்த மிருதுவான தோல் இல்லை.
கருமை (pigmentation), சுருக்கங்கள் (wrinkles),
பல இடங்களில் மெல்லிய, சேதமடைந்த தோல்.

இது வயதின் காரணமாக அல்ல.
இது ஒரு பழக்கத்தின் விளைவு.

இந்த சிறுமி 12 வயதிலிருந்தே “whitening creams” பயன்படுத்தி வருகிறாள்.

ஒரு குழந்தை—
இன்னும் உடல் முழுமையாக வளராத வயதில்—
அவள் தோலில் தொடர்ந்து ரசாயனங்களை பயன்படுத்தியிருக்கிறாள்.

நாம் இப்போது ஒரு மிக முக்கியமான கேள்வியை கேட்க வேண்டிய நேரம்:
👉 இது யாருடைய தவறு?
பெற்றோர்களா?
அல்லது சமுதாயமா?
அல்லது இரண்டுமே சேர்ந்து உருவாக்கிய அழுத்தமா?

நம்முடைய சமூகம் இன்னும் ஒரு தவறான நம்பிக்கையில் சிக்கியுள்ளது:
“வெள்ளையாக இருந்தால் தான் அழகு.”

இந்த எண்ணம் எங்கேயிருந்து வருகிறது?

📱 சமூக ஊடகங்கள்
👨‍👩‍👧 குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்களின் கருத்துகள்
🗣️ உறவினர்கள், நண்பர்கள்

“இது போட்டா வெள்ளையா ஆகலாம்…”
“கறுப்பா ஆகிடாதே…”
“இப்பவே கவனிக்கணும்…”

இந்த வார்த்தைகள் ஒரு குழந்தையின் மனதில் மெதுவாக
தன் இயல்பான நிறத்தை வெறுக்கும் மனநிலையை உருவாக்குகின்றன.

நான் பல தடவைகள் தெரியப்படுத்தி உள்ளேன்
⚠️ சந்தையில்கிடைக்கும் பல “whitening creams” பாதுகாப்பானவை அல்ல.
அவற்றில்:
❌ ஸ்டெராய்டுகள் (Topical steroids)
❌ ஹைட்ரோகுவினோன் (Hydroquinone)
❌ மர்குரி (Mercury) போன்ற நச்சு பொருட்கள்

இவை ஆரம்பத்தில் வெண்மை மற்றும் சீரான நிறத்தை கொடுத்தாலும், நீண்ட காலத்தில்:
🚫 தோல் மெல்லிதல் (skin thinning)
🚫 நிரந்தர pigmentation
🚫 ஸ்டெராய்ட்களினால் ஏற்படும் சேதம் (steroid damaged skin)
🚫 சுருக்கங்கள்
🚫 முகத்தில் இரத்த நாளங்கள் தோன்றுதல்
🚫 ஹார்மோன் பாதிப்புகள் (சில நேரங்களில்)
என்ற பல தீமைகளை தருகின்றன.

ஒரு 12 வயது குழந்தை இந்த முடிவை தனியாக எடுக்காது.
யாரோ ஒருவர் அதை பரிந்துரைத்திருப்பார்.
யாரோ ஒருவர் அதை வாங்கித் தந்திருப்பார். யாரோ ஒருவர் “இது நல்லது” என்று நம்ப வைத்திருப்பார்.
அதனால், இது ஒரு தனி நபரின் தவறு அல்ல.
இது ஒரு அமைப்பு சார்ந்த பிரச்சினை.

👨‍👩‍👧 பெற்றோர்களுக்கு:
உங்கள் குழந்தையின் தோல் ஒரு “project” அல்ல.
அது ஒரு உயிருள்ள, வளர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் உறுப்பு.

அவர்களின்:
✔️ ஆரோக்கியத்தை பாதுகாரு ங்கள்
✔️ தன்னம்பிக்கையை வளர்த்திடுங்கள்
✔️ இயல்பான அழகை ஏற்க கற்றுக்கொடுங்கள்

“நிறம் மாற்றுவது” அல்ல,
“தோலை பாதுகாப்பது” தான் உண்மையான பராமரிப்பு.

🌍 சமுதாயத்திற்கு:
நாம் இன்னும் நிறத்தை அடிப்படையாக வைத்து அழகை அளக்கிறோம்.
இந்த எண்ணம் மாறாமல் இருந்தால்,
இன்னும் பல குழந்தைகள் இதே பாதையில் செல்ல நேரிடும்.

👉 அழகு = ஆரோக்கியமான தோல்
👉 அழகு ≠ வெள்ளை நிறம்

இந்த சிறுமியின் கைகள் ஒரு எச்சரிக்கை.
இது ஒரு கதையல்ல—இது நடக்கிறது.

நாம் இப்போது மாற்றம் செய்யவில்லை என்றால்,
நாளை இது இன்னும் பல குழந்தைகளின் நிஜமாக மாறும்.

உங்கள் குழந்தைகளுக்கு சொல்லுங்கள்:
“நீங்கள் எப்படி இருக்கிறீர்களோ, அப்படியே அழகானவர்கள்.”

பாதுகாப்பான பராமரிப்பு தான் முக்கியம்.
இயல்பான நிறமே உண்மையான அழகு.

In 2014, I had the privilege of working as an intern (House Officer) at the Professorial Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo, alongside my co-HO, Dr. Chamara Dalugama.

We were incredibly fortunate to present patient histories during the grand ward round of Professor Rezvi Sheriff on his farewell day. As non-Colombo graduates, being selected for internship training in a University of Colombo professorial unit was a true honor.

I still vividly remember that proud and unforgettable moment.

Professor Rezvi Sheriff was an eminent clinician and academic, whose remarkable contributions to medicine and to our nation continue to inspire.
