Thank you for everyone commented on yesterday’s post. You all are correct the Bear hug technique to lift the person in care set up has considered as highly controversial and unsafe practice in UK for caregiver and the individual receiving care. It puts excessive strain on a caregiver's back and can injure a patient's ribs, knees or shoulders.

In our training we not only identify unsafe practices we taught our care team safe practices including sit to stand, use of equipment such as handling belt, rota stand, zimmer frames, rollers frame and walkers and hoists.

Safe Practice sit to stand ??

In our training, we asked our care practitioners to demonstrate the ongoing practice used in the Sri Lankan care sector for sit-to-stand transfers. This demonstration reflects what they have previously learned and what many are currently practising in their workplaces.

I would like to ask a question for discussion and reflection:

Do you think this technique is safe for the individual receiving care?

If your answer is yes or no, would you be able to explain the reasons behind your opinion?

At Care Herts, we believe learning comes through open discussion, critical thinking, and always putting the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of the individual first.

Care practitioners developing their understanding of different types of mobility frames and their appropriate use.

This includes:

* Zimmer frames
* Rollator frames
* Rollator walkers with padded armrests

At Care Herts, we strongly value person-centred care. We believe that one size does not fit all.

The prescription of equipment should always be tailored to the individual — considering their needs, abilities, and limitations. It is essential to assess not only what a person can do independently, but also where they require support, and to what extent.

Choosing the right equipment is not just about mobility — it is about promoting dignity, safety, and independence in everyday life.

Special thanks to Thotawattha Engineering and Mr Jayananda Thotawattha, and the team for providing equipment and facilitating this event.

It is truly an amazing feeling to take this first step with Care Herts Sri Lanka and to share these photos with you today.

Having been involved in elderly care in the UK since 2009, and running Care Herts Limited since 2013, I have now decided to bring that knowledge and experience to Sri Lanka—to serve our mothers and fathers, who deserve far more than what is currently available.

This journey became deeply personal when I was searching for care for my own father last year. During that time, I witnessed many gaps and shortcomings in the system. Those experiences became the driving force behind my commitment to introducing true person-centred care in Sri Lanka.

Today, we are both happy and proud to announce that we have successfully completed our first Care Practitioner Training. We have nurtured a group of compassionate, kind-hearted carers who not only understand but truly feel the essence of person-centred care.

This is just the beginning.
