BPH signs & management
🟣 What is BPH?
➟ BPH means benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called enlarged prostate.
➟ It is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can press on the urine tube and affect urination.
➟ It becomes more common with increasing age, especially after 50 years.
🟣 Common signs
➟ Frequent urination, especially at night.
➟ Sudden urge to pass urine.
➟ Weak or slow urine stream.
➟ Difficulty starting urination.
➟ Straining while passing urine.
➟ Dribbling after urination.
➟ Feeling that the bladder is not fully empty.
➟ In severe cases, urine may stop completely, called urinary retention.
🟣 Important note
➟ BPH is not prostate cancer, but both can cause urinary symptoms.
➟ Do not assume urinary symptoms are only due to age; urine infection, stones, diabetes, prostate cancer, or bladder problems may also cause similar symptoms.
🟣 Diagnosis
➟ Doctor may ask about urinary symptoms, medicines, fluid intake, and nighttime urination.
➟ Tests may include urine test, PSA blood test, kidney function test, ultrasound, urine flow test, and digital re**al examination.
➟ PSA can increase in BPH, infection, inflammation, or prostate cancer, so results must be interpreted by a doctor.
🟣 Management
➟ Mild symptoms may be managed with watchful waiting and lifestyle changes.
➟ Reduce evening fluids if night urination is troublesome.
➟ Limit caffeine, alcohol, and very spicy drinks if they worsen urgency.
➟ Pass urine before sleep and avoid holding urine for long periods.
➟ Medicines such as alpha-blockers or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors may be prescribed depending on symptoms and prostate size.
➟ Severe symptoms, repeated urine retention, kidney problems, bladder stones, or recurrent infections may need procedures or surgery such as TURP or minimally invasive treatments.
🟣 See a doctor if
➟ Urinary symptoms are frequent, worsening, disturbing sleep, or affecting daily life.
➟ There is blood in urine, burning urination, recurrent urine infection, or unexplained weight loss.
➟ Symptoms continue despite medicines or lifestyle changes.
🟣 Seek urgent medical care if
➟ You cannot pass urine at all.
➟ There is fever with urinary symptoms, severe lower abdominal pain, severe back/flank pain, heavy blood in urine, vomiting, confusion, or weakness.
