I’m prepping for my Fundamentals of Perimenopause Nutrition workshop, taking place here in Luxembourg next week, and thought I’d share a couple key images from the presentation with you all.

Perimenopause can be a bit of a sh*t show when it comes to a wild array of symptoms (thankfully, not all of us experience ALL of these!), which can hit across MANY systems of our body - gastrointestinal, nervous system, brain & cognition, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, endocrine, and of course, reproductive. Plus, the dreaded body composition shifts. Sigh.

Hormonal fluctuations are the driving force behind all of these, and are augmented/exacerbated by aging, life changes, stressors, career shifts and the like. There’s a LOT going on for women in midlife!

Importantly, our health changes rapidly at this stage of life too, again much is hormonally driven. And if we don’t pay attention early, we may end up with more serious issues down the line.

So let’s be sure to take a look at the WHOLE picture and map out our nutrition and lifestyle strategies accordingly (plus hormone therapy as appropriate for your particular situation). Your future health, strength and independence depend on this!

Your friendly-yet-urgent reminder that while body & weight changes are visible (and frustrating!) it’s often the changes you *cannot* yet see that can have the most dramatic long-term effects and/or consequences.

Don’t lose the forest by focusing on a single tree in midlife. Make sure you (and your healthcare team) are taking a broad and holistic look at your health - cardiovascular, metabolic, digestive, bone and mental health all experience changes or disruptions and may need support.

Keys to Supporting “The Forest”:

- Get regular labs done (esp glucose, insulin, A1C, iron/ferritin, vitamin D, liver and kidney function, cholesterol)
- Get a DEXA scan when possible
- Eat for energy, vitality, gut health and disease prevention
- Exercise for strength, bone density & mobility
- Eliminate health-limiting habits like smoking and alcohol
- Prioritize sleep. Schedule a sleep study (apnea in women is increasingly common) if you don’t feel rested even after sufficient sleep
- Add treatments like hormone therapy as appropriate (talk to your doctor). It is powerful and preventative!
- Stress management is not a “nice to have” at this time of life, but a metabolic necessity!
- Seek out social and emotional support! You don’t have to go this alone.

This is just a reminder that it’s ok to feel ambivalent about body changes. They can feel unpredictable and uncontrollable.

But you only get this one body. Feed it, nourish it, exercise it, treat it with care. She’ll take you far!

And, you’re worthy and wonderful regardless of the appearance or size of your body. Even (especially!) if that changes.

Another day, another amazing Lëtz Menopause workshop. The power of women supporting women is just incredible and awe-inspiring. Even with all my training (and lived experience!) on the subject I learned new things, and importantly, made new connections and got to share stories with other women about the challenges and delights (yes, there are some!) of this time of life. Thanks Susanne, Caroline, Marthe, and the amazing Cathy for including me. 🥰

I posted yesterday about some of the joys of food and the inherent celebration, comfort and connection that’s often involved with eating. While this is true for many people, food definitely isn’t fun, joyous, delightful for comforting for ALL people. Today’s post is an acknowledgement for these tender and sensitive folks.

The reality is that food is like a never-ending task that must be done multiple times daily, forever and ever until we’re dead. For many people, food can be seen as a chore, a task, a “to do” that requires planning, preparation, focus and attention. This isn’t something that everyone has the capacity for.

Having a steady supply of food also requires resources, such as time, money, access to a place to purchase food, a way to transport it home, and a place to store and preserve it so it doesn’t go bad. Not everyone has this. Many many do not.

Preparing food requires appliances, utensils, storage space, and cooking skills. Ability to read and follow recipes is also a highly useful skill. Again, these aren’t things universally available to all.

And for some, food smells awful, looks gross, feels uncomfortable in their mouth, tastes disgusting or actively makes them nauseous. Or, perhaps food was involved in a traumatic experience in the past, such as choking or swallowing difficulties, and is aversive, frightening and anxiety-provoking.

In many of these cases, food is unpleasant, overwhelming, exhausting and generally problematic. Facing it every day is a major energy drain, yet it’s also the very thing that is needed to gain energy.

For those of you who find food to be less than joyful, I see you too. You are not alone and you’re not weird or a problem.

Reach out if you or a family member struggle with food. It doesn’t have to be quite so hard, or isolating.
