Hepatitis A: What You Need to Know
By ×Be Holistically Healthy, MD× By Dr. Georgiana Farrugia Bonnici

Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus. Unlike hepatitis B and C, it does not usually cause chronic liver disease, and most people recover.

The Hepatitis A Virus is mainly transmitted through the faecal–oral route, particularly through contaminated food or water or close contact with an infected person. Poor hand hygiene can facilitate transmission.

Common symptoms include:

Tiredness and feeling generally unwell,
Loss of appetite, Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal discomfort, Fever, Dark urine and pale stools, joint aches and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Some people, especially young children, may have few or no symptoms.

Prevention matters. Good hand hygiene, safe food and water practices, as well as hepatitis A vaccination for people for whom it is recommended can significantly reduce the risk of infection.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for hepatitis A; management is generally supportive. Although most cases resolve without complications, seek medical advice if hepatitis A is suspected, particularly if jaundice develops as some severe cases may require hospitalization.

The Malta Resuscitation Council has called for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to become more accessible across Malta, saying that too many of these life-saving devices remain hidden inside offices, hotels and other private buildings where members of the public either do not know they exist or cannot access them during an emergency.
