FMCI is committed to delivering the targets of the World Cancer Declaration.

Operating since December 2020, FMCI works closely with hospitals specialized in oncology to identify and provide support to cancer fighters, celebrate cancer survivors, honour the taken, and never give up hope to patients and their close ones. It is foreseen that the death toll will increase to 16.3 million per year by 2040 (Source: Globocan 2020 and Cancer Tomorrow, IARC). Thus, FMCI embraces the

battle against cancer through strategic partnerships involving members and other institutions interested in fighting cancer. It aims to save lives by focusing on what needs to be done, by building capacity to meet local needs. Among the planned activities of FMCI to contribute to World Cancer day, running person-to-person exchanges, such as awareness campaigns, workshops, & conferences about cancer, early cancer detection & cancer prevention around the island are on agenda. The Falcon Memorial Cancer Institute will be coming forward with other activities as a drive to call for action.

Which cancers are most common today?
Understanding the highest-risk cancers helps people get screened earlier and early screening saves lives.

According to the latest global WHO data, the most common cancers worldwide are:

🔵 Breast cancer - the most diagnosed cancer globally
🟤 Lung cancer - leading cause of cancer deaths
🟫 Colorectal cancer – rising in both men and women
🟣 Prostate cancer – one of the most common in men
🟡 Stomach cancer – still a major concern worldwide

Cancer remains one of the world’s biggest health challenges, with nearly 10 million deaths per year, yet up to 30–50% of cases can be prevented through early detection and lifestyle changes.

Which early signs should you never ignore?
Cancer often develops quietly but more than 50% of cancers are diagnosed too late, when treatment becomes more difficult.

Globally, the WHO reports that cancer is responsible for nearly 10 million deaths each year, yet many cases could be detected earlier if people recognised the warning signs.

Here are some symptoms that should never be overlooked:
• Unexplained fatigue
• Persistent pain
• Changes in a mole or skin lesion
• Unusual bleeding
• Long-lasting cough
• Unexplained weight loss

These signs do not mean cancer by themselves but they should always encourage a medical check-up.

Do you know the right age to begin cancer screening?

Many late diagnoses happen simply because people start too late.

Here are the recommended age guidelines for the most common screenings:

🔵 Prostate: from age 50 (or 45 with family history)
🎀 Breast: from age 40 / regular mammograms from age 50
🟫 Colorectal: from age 50
🟣 Cervical: from age 25 (HPV test / Pap smear)
🟤 Skin: yearly check-ups at any age

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month.
A time to raise awareness about a rare type of cancer that can develop in the bones or soft tissues of the body, including muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons and tissues around the joints.

Sarcoma can appear almost anywhere in the body, which is why its symptoms are not always easy to recognise. It may start as a painless lump, swelling, persistent bone pain, or discomfort that slowly gets worse over time.

Not every lump or pain is cancer, but any change that persists, grows, or feels unusual should be checked by a medical professional. Early medical advice can help detect problems sooner and guide the right care.

This month, let’s help spread awareness, encourage early check-ups, and support people living with rare cancers.
