Hi, we’re Alex and Talia.
Neither of us planned to start a wellness company. But here’s how two women from completely different backgrounds, ended up creating Naker.
Alex’s journey began in marketing.
For many years she worked across hospitality, travel, retail, jewellery and cultured pearls.
During that time, she worked alongside pearl farms, learning every stage of the fascinating yet painstaking process, from nurturing a tiny oyster to harvesting a beautiful cultured pearl years later.
It was through the pearling industry that she first discovered nacre, the remarkable natural material that forms every pearl, and is the foundation of our brand.
Talia’s career began in finance, specialising in budgets and financial analysis.
After becoming a mother, her priorities shifted. Taking up Pilates, and later becoming a Pilates teacher, sparked a deeper interest in health, nutrition and holistic wellbeing.
Although our careers couldn’t have been more different, we both found ourselves drawn towards a simpler, more natural approach to wellness.
By the time we met in Mauritius, we were both navigating very different challenges.
Alex was trying to make a struggling pearl farm work, while Talia was supporting a close family member through serious illness.
Different as our circumstances were, both experiences made us think more deeply about the choices we make every day.
We shared podcasts, compared notes on books we were reading, and met religiously at the gym every morning. Looking back, it was during those conversations that the foundations of Naker were taking shape.
The aha moment came one day on a boat trip to Coin de Mire, a protected island off the north coast of Mauritius.
Alex was frustrated with the pearl farm and began talking about pearl powder, a little-known by-product of the pearling industry. She explained how the workers had been taking it themselves for years because they believed it helped keep them well.
Alex had always wanted to do something with that story, but she didn’t want to do it alone.
