It is with profound sorrow and shock that the Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi (PHASOM) announces the sudden and tragic passing of our respected colleague, Pharmacist 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗮𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗿𝘄𝗮.

Mr. Chirwa was involved in a road traffic accident three days ago and was receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH). He passed away this morning. His remains are currently at KCH. Following necessary arrangements, the body will be transported to Mzuzu this afternoon, with the burial scheduled to take place tomorrow.

PHASOM extends its deepest condolences to the Chirwa family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew him. We mourn the loss of a dedicated professional whose contributions to the pharmacy community will not be forgotten.

May the soul of our departed colleague rest in eternal peace.

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the sudden and untimely passing of our dear colleague and dedicated Pharmacy Technician, 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗼 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝘂𝘄𝗮.

Chisomo’s gentle spirit, professionalism, and commitment to serving others touched many lives. Her departure leaves a deep void in our hearts and in the pharmacy community.

We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Kaluwa family, relatives, friends, and all who knew and loved her. May you find strength and comfort in one another during this difficult time. May the soul of our beloved Chisomo Kaluwa rest in eternal peace.🕊️

𝗣𝗛𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗠 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority - Malawi 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi has issued a strong statement highlighting the dangers of unsupervised use of Sildenafil (Vi**ra) and Tadalafil, linking it to many deaths in the first half of 2026. The society urges the public to seek certified medical prescriptions and calls for tighter regulation.

KUHeS Academic Appointed to COMESA Health Products and Technologies Sub-Committee as Malawi's Traditional Medicine Expert.

Dr. John Mponda, Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences under the School of Life Sciences and Allied Health Professions (SLAHP) has been appointed to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Health Products and Technologies Sub-Committee.

Nominated by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, through the Ministry of Health, to serve on the Sub-Committee, Dr. Mponda will represent Malawi as a Traditional Medicine Expert.

The COMESA Health Products and Technologies Sub-Committee provides a platform for member states to collaborate on matters relating to health products, health technologies, regulatory harmonization, and the strengthening of health systems across the region.

Through this platform, member states work together to promote access to safe, effective, and quality-assured health products and technologies including traditional medicines.

SLAHP Executive Dean, Associate Professor Arox Kamng’ona expressed confidence that with his expertise and leadership Dr. Mponda will meaningfully contribute to the advancement of regional health priorities while enhancing Malawi's visibility and contribution within COMESA.

Dr. Mponda's appointment is a significant recognition of his professional accomplishments and provides an opportunity for Malawi to contribute to and benefit from regional efforts aimed at strengthening health systems and advancing the development, regulation, and utilization of health products and technologies.

With profound sorrow, the Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi announces the sudden passing of our dear colleague, 𝗠𝗮𝘂𝗯𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗠𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮. Maubrey served as a Pharmacy Assistant at Malamulo Adventist Hospital. He was tragically taken from us in a road traffic accident last night at Nsuazi.

His dedication, professionalism, and warm spirit touched many lives within the pharmacy fraternity and beyond. Though his time with us was cut short, his legacy of service and commitment to healthcare will remain in our hearts.

We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved family, friends, colleagues at Malamulo Adventist Hospital, and all who knew and loved him. May his soul rest in peace!🕊️🕊️

A leading expert in the fight against substandard and falsified medicines, Prof. Heide has spent decades researching medicine quality, pharmaceutical regulation, and public health challenges affecting developing countries. His work has influenced global discussions on protecting patients from poor-quality medicines and strengthening healthcare systems. He previously served as Senior Pharmacist Adviser in Somalia and as a Professor at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (2014–2015).
