MDUM Engages Government Health Service Commission on Health Workforce Challenges

On 17 July 2026, the Medical Doctors Union of Malawi (MDUM), represented by its President, Dr Henry Makowa, paid a courtesy visit to the Government Health Service Commission through the Human Resource for Health Coalition (HRHC).

During the meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Commission, MDUM joined other health professional bodies in advocating for solutions to key challenges affecting the health workforce under the leadership of the HRHC Chairperson, Mr Solomon Chomba. The discussions focused on recruitment and promotion processes, health worker security, burnout, staff demotivation, and updated employment statistics submitted to the Commission.

The Executive Secretary welcomed the engagement and reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to strengthening collaboration with health worker organisations, including ensuring the Coalition's meaningful involvement in key processes affecting the health sector.

Following the engagement, MDUM participated in the HRHC's first quarterly meeting, during which members validated the Coalition's constitution as part of the registration process, reviewed the current state of the health workforce, and identified priority areas for joint advocacy with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders.

MDUM remains committed to championing the welfare of medical doctors while working collaboratively with other health professional associations to build a motivated, protected, and sustainable health workforce capable of delivering quality healthcare services to all Malawians.

MEDICAL DOCTORS UNION OF MALAWI (MDUM) STATEMENT ON THE TRAGIC DEATH OF
DR. ATUGHANILE CHOMO

The Medical Doctors Union of Malawi (MDUM) has received with profound shock and deep sadness
the tragic news of the untimely death of our colleague, Dr. Atughanile Chomo.
The circumstances surrounding her death, as currently reported, are deeply disturbing and have sent
shockwaves throughout the medical fraternity and the nation at large. We extend our heartfelt
condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched. We mourn the loss
of a dedicated medical professional whose service to humanity will be remembered.
MDUM strongly call upon the Malawi Police Service to conduct a thorough, professional, impartial, and
expeditious investigation into this matter so that the true circumstances surrounding Dr. Chomo's death
are established and, if any criminal acts are involved, those responsible are brought to justice without
delay.
We further urge members of the public and the media to refrain from speculation or the circulation of
unverified information while investigations are ongoing. It is important that the integrity of the
investigative process is preserved and that the family is accorded the dignity and privacy they deserve
during this difficult time.
MDUM stands in solidarity with Dr. Chomo's family, colleagues, and the entire medical community as
we grieve this painful loss. We remain committed to advocating for the safety, security, and wellbeing
of all healthcare professionals in Malawi.

It is with profound sorrow and deep sadness that the Medical Doctors Union of Malawi (MDUM) announces the untimely passing of our beloved colleague, Dr. Atughanile Chomo.
Dr. Chomo was a dedicated medical doctor serving at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in the Accident and Emergency Department, where she committed herself to saving lives and caring for patients.
Her passing has left the medical fraternity and the nation in shock and mourning. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.

Koma mwa chisomo cha Mulungu komanso thandizo lochokera ku bungwe la mnzake wa bizinesi wa abambo awo, anakwanitsa kupitiriza maphunziro awo mpaka atamaliza ndipo anamaliza maphunziro awo ngati dokotala mu 2023.

🌟 Spotlight Monday | Meet Dr. Benjamin Ndhlamin Nkosi

This Monday, we are proud to spotlight Dr. Benjamin Ndhlamin Nkosi, a dedicated Medical Officer, entrepreneur, and aspiring health systems leader whose journey reflects resilience, determination, and a passion for service.

Dr. Nkosi began his education at Chizani Primary School in TA Khosolo, Mzimba South East, before continuing at Chiputula Primary School in Mzuzu. His academic excellence earned him selection to Luwinga Secondary School in 2007.

In 2011, he was selected to study Bachelor of Education (Science) at Chancellor College. However, due to the double intake and limited class space, science students were given an opportunity to apply for the MBBS programme at the College of Medicine through a competitive merit-based entrance process. Inspired and encouraged by Dr. Emmanuel Nyondo, and driven by his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, Dr. Nkosi applied successfully and graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2020.

He began his professional career at Embangweni Mission Hospital, where he served as Deputy Hospital Director from October 2021 to August 2024. Since 2025, he has been serving as a Medical Officer at Neno District Hospital, providing quality healthcare to the community.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Nkosi is a passionate entrepreneur. He is investing in the future through pine tree plantations for timber production and owns Chizani Maizemills Limited, demonstrating that healthcare professionals can also build successful businesses that create employment and economic growth.

Looking ahead, he hopes to pursue a Master of Business Administration in Health Systems Management at KUHeS to strengthen his leadership and management skills for improving healthcare institutions.

Today we celebrate Dr. Jamillah Millie, a Surgical Resident at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, currently training in General Surgery under COSECSA.

Dr. Millie’s journey into medicine began in a rural community where opportunities for girls were limited. She completed her primary education at Ngwenya LEA School before earning selection to Ludzi Secondary School—a milestone that marked the beginning of her dream. Determined to break barriers, she became the first girl from her community to pursue medicine, inspiring many others to believe that greater achievements are possible regardless of one's background.

Today, she is pursuing her passion for surgery, driven by a desire to heal, restore, and transform lives. Every patient she serves and every procedure she performs strengthens her commitment to making a lasting difference in healthcare.

Her long-term goal is to become a highly skilled reconstructive surgeon, helping restore both function and dignity to patients whose lives have been affected by injury, disease, or congenital conditions.

🌟 Today, We Celebrate Dr. Waliko Lipemba 🌟

Today, we celebrate Dr. Waliko Lipemba, whose journey is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of a dream.

Dr. Lipemba's aspiration to become a doctor began in primary school when he told his mother that one day he would study at the College of Medicine. That childhood dream grew into a passion for understanding the human body and serving others through medicine.

He attended Joyce Banda Foundation Primary School, completed his MSCE at Viphya Private Secondary School in 2014, and later pursued A-Level studies at St. Patrick's Academy in 2017. He subsequently earned admission to the University of Malawi College of Medicine (now KUHeS), where he completed his medical degree.

Despite facing financial challenges, academic setbacks, and an initial disappointment when he was not selected for university, Dr. Lipemba never gave up. Through perseverance, hard work, and the support of his family, he remained committed to his goal and ultimately achieved his dream of becoming a doctor.

Dr. Lipemba recently completed his mandatory internship at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and is currently awaiting employment.
