Having spent time essentially 'retired' in Malaysia while my husband was doing business, I can attest to this. I was away from my kids, pets, career, and even husband much of the time. I felt purposeless and, consequently, depressed. But it did lead me down a road of self-discovery. "Who am I without all of these other identities?" It also helped me understand I was (and am still not) ready for retirement. '-)
