Then they came for breech birth, and I did not speak out, because mine was not a breech birth. Then they came for home birth, and I did not speak out, because mine was not a home birth. Then they came for my birth, and there was no one left to speak for me.” — drstu

I recently heard this poem on Dr Stu’s podcast and I cannot say how much it resonated with me.

When I had my babies I thought birth was pretty normal. Low intervention, nothing dramatic. As I moved into midwifery I began to see that this felt like the minority, not the majority.

After I had my third quickly at home, something snapped in me that was irreversible. The absolute realisation of what normal birth can be. Soon after I went back to work I couldn’t contain myself any longer. I felt I had to fight for this, to share the good news of normal physiological birth, to protect women and give them real options.

This poem hit so hard because it is so easy not to fight for things when they don’t affect us directly. Whether you had a great experience or a hard one, this is a reminder that it is always worth standing up for the things that matter 💥

ACOG’s new clinical guidance encourages ob-gyn collaboration with doulas and gives ob-gyns the tools they need to better understand a doula’s role. It also highlights the importance of stronger partnerships between clinicians and doulas, which can provide vital support across the lifespan—including during and after pregnancy—and can lead to better patient outcomes."

Popular physician who long warned against vitamin K shots for newborns has changed his stance.

For decades, Dr. Joseph Mercola stated that vitamin K shots were unnecessary for newborns. Today, he writes:

"The data is clear: vitamin K saves lives."

This change comes after more parents began declining vitamin K—some because they believe no intervention is needed for healthy newborns, some due to concerns about ingredients, and some because they mistakenly believe it is a vaccine.

To be clear, as doulas, we believe in parental autonomy. However, we also believe parents deserve access to clear, evidence-based information, including changes in scientific evidence and changes in the opinions of medical professionals.

Accurate information is essential for truly informed decision-making.

ProPublica recently contacted Mercola while preparing an article about babies who died after their parents declined the vitamin K shot.

For years, Mercola wrote, "Vitamin K shots are completely unnecessary for your newborn." Today, his position is different.

He now states:

"Based on the totality of the published evidence, I support vitamin K prophylaxis for all newborns."

He wrote, "Vitamin K deficiency bleeding is rare, but when it occurs, the consequences can be devastating and irreversible. A single injection at birth can prevent it. Please talk to your doctor."

Mercola remains a leading vaccine skeptic with a large platform, making this change particularly noteworthy as vitamin K refusal has increased and cases of vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) have risen.

VKDB is rare. The challenge is that when it does occur, the consequences can be catastrophic, including permanent brain injury or death. We cannot predict which babies will develop VKDB, hence offering it prophylactically.

Recommendations for routine newborn vitamin K have remained consistent since the 1960s.

Medical autonomy matters. Informed decisions require accurate, evidence-based information that is up to date.
