What you’re hearing is the machine using ultrasound energy to break up the cataract so it can be removed safely.

During surgery, you may hear buzzing sounds, see bright lights, colours, or shadows.

All of these are completely normal.

One reason I share videos like this is because fear often comes from not knowing what to expect.

So if you’re planning for cataract surgery, save this video.
Send it to your parents who are afraid of eye surgery!

One of the most common questions patients ask before surgery is:

“Doctor, will I feel anything?”

The answer is usually no.
probably just some pressure sensation.

But you may hear sounds like this.

What you’re listening to is the phacoemulsification machine.

It uses ultrasound energy to break up the cloudy cataract into tiny fragments so it can be safely removed from the eye.

Many patients are surprised that cataract surgery is usually performed while they are awake.

You won’t see the surgery itself.

You may notice bright lights, colours, shadows, water flowing, or hear gentle buzzing sounds like the one in this video.

And that’s completely normal.

In fact, one of the reasons I share videos like this is to help patients become familiar with the experience before they step into the operating theatre with me.

Because fear often comes from the unknown.

When you know what to expect, the experience becomes much less frightening.

Rest assured, I will be guiding you with my voice too every step of the way.

So if you’re planning for cataract surgery in the future, save this video or share this with your parents who are afraid of surgery.

Yesterday, I lost one of the influential figures in my ophthalmology journey.

I looked back my photo album and found a photo of him seeing a patient in his room while I was discussing the patient’s management with him.

He was the consultant under whom I began my early training and service in Penang General Hospital. To many, he was an exceptional ophthalmologist.

To me, he was much more than that.
He was a teacher and a mentor.

He was one of the kindest people I have ever met. He never sought recognition. He carried himself with quiet confidence and commitment to his work. No matter how demanding the clinic or OT became, he remained calm and composed.

His passing is a tremendous loss to the ophthalmology community. But more importantly, it is a loss to the countless patients, colleagues, trainees, 002 family and friends whose lives he touched throughout his career.

The measure of a great teacher is not how much knowledge he possesses, but how many people become better because of him.

Thank you, Dr Salim, for your guidance, your kindness, and your example. Your legacy will continue through every patient we care for and every young doctor we teach.

You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Rest in peace chief!

If you wonder why your eyes feel dry after make up..

This is what we eye doctors often see under our slit lamp microscope.

Your makeup may look beautiful on the outside.

But along the eyelid margin?

Not so much.

See those dark deposits around the gland openings?

That’s often mascara, eyeliner, makeup residue, and oil buildup accumulating around the meibomian glands.

And it’s even more common with waterproof makeup that isn’t completely removed at the end of the day.

These tiny openings are called meibomian glands.

Their job is to produce the oil layer of your tears.
Without that oil layer, your tears evaporate much faster.

When these glands become blocked, you may start experiencing:

👁️ Burning eyes
👁️ Sandy feeling in eyes
👁️ Watery eyes
👁️ Fluctuating vision
👁️ Seeing clearer after a blink
👁️ Eye tired

This doesn’t mean you need to stop wearing makeup.
It simply means you need to wear it wisely.

✔️ Avoid applying eyeliner directly on the waterline
✔️ Remove eye makeup thoroughly every night
✔️ Be extra careful with waterproof products
✔️ Pay attention if your eyes constantly feel irritated

Because sometimes the problem isn’t that your eyes aren’t producing enough tears.

It’s that your tears are missing the oil that keeps them from evaporating.

And that tiny detail can make a huge difference to your comfort.

📌I’ve pinned a carousel on my page explaining how to wear eye makeup more safely and reduce the risk of dry eyes.

I’ve seen so many eye injuries caused by flying projectiles from grass cutter.

You never know what comes flying out of it.

A small stone, piece of metal, tiny glass piece, or debris can be launched at high speed and strike the eye before you have time to react.

These flying objects are faster than your eye blinking reflex.

Some result in corneal wounds & scars.
Some require emergency surgery.
Some can cause permanent loss of vision.

I wished more people knew this:
A simple habit.
But potentially sight-saving.

• Avoid walking too close to active grass-cutting work
• Turn your face away when passing by
• Cover your eyes if debris is being thrown around
• Even if you wear spectacles, objects can fly in from@under your spectacles.
• Wear protective eyewear if you’re operating the machine yourself

Vision is precious.
It only takes one unlucky projectile to change a life forever.

Share this with someone who works outdoors or operates a grass cutter regularly.
