🩺 Little Doctors & Smart Machines 2026 πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), successfully conducted the Little Doctors & Smart Machines community engagement programme on 12 June 2026 at Tadika Iman Taman Universiti and Tadika Iman Taman Pulai Jaya.

Throughout the programme, the children learned about the four vital signs: heart rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation, and respiration through fun and interactive activities. They also had the opportunity to explore healthcare technologies by using a forehead thermometer, pulse oximeter, and stethoscope.

To encourage continuous learning, the child received a Little Doctor Passport, while the kindergartens were provided with educational resources and medical trolley toys to support ongoing health education activities.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Iman ELC Sdn. Bhd., Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (ILKKM) Johor Bahru, Farm Fresh Berhad, and Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. for their valuable collaboration and support in making this programme a success.

Together, we inspired the next generation of Little Doctors! πŸ’™πŸŒŸ

From standing inside one of Japan’s most remarkable research facilities to witnessing the breathtaking beauty of Mount Fuji, KIZURU gave us an experience that will stay with us for a lifetime.

Organized by BIOMEHS, Department of Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the KIZURU Program was more than just an academic visit, it was a journey of learning, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

One of the most memorable parts of our journey was the opportunity to visit NanoTerasu in Sendai, Japan’s new 3 GeV synchrotron radiation facility and one of the country’s major scientific research centres. Often referred to as a β€œgiant microscope”, NanoTerasu produces synchrotron light that is extremely bright, allowing researchers to study structures and materials at the nanoscale, far beyond what can normally be seen by the human eye. The facility supports research in many areas including medicine, materials, energy, and biotechnology, making it an important place for future scientific discoveries.

Our journey continued at the Institute of Fluid Sciences (IFS), Tohoku University, where we had the honor of conducting a mini symposium session together with their researchers and academicians. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, share our latest research works, and learn from each other’s experiences and expertise.

We were also grateful for the chance to tour several laboratories within IFS and observe the impressive research projects being carried out by their teams. Every lab visit reflected the passion and dedication behind meaningful scientific work.

A special thank you to Prof. Makoto Ohta for warmly facilitating and supporting our visit throughout this memorable journey. Your kindness and hospitality truly made us feel welcomed.

Beyond the academic experience, KIZURU also allowed us to appreciate the unique culture and beauty of Japan, from the vibrant atmosphere of Tokyo City to the peaceful and majestic view of Mount Fuji. More than just a visit, KIZURU became a bridge connecting knowledge, friendship, culture, and future collaborations.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences, UTM, was honoured to host the Cognitive Neuroscience Club from the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences & Human Development, UNIMAS, together with our BIOMEHS Club students. Through VORTEX – Venturing into Outstanding Research, Technology and Educational Explorations, the program brought together knowledge sharing, exchange of ideas, and meaningful cultural experiences in one vibrant day.

A beautiful Rhythms of Sarawak cultural performance and an interactive Laksa Sarawak cooking session were truly a feast for both the eyes and taste buds πŸ˜‹. In return, we treated our guests to local Johor delicacies, especially the iconic Laksa Johor, giving them a flavour of our own culture to savour. The experience continued with lab visits to Motion Analysis, Biomechanics, Thermal, and Neuroengineering labs, offering a glimpse into the world of biomedical engineering.

Thank you to Dr Atiyah and Dr Norhasmira for the initiative and effort in making this program a success. Here’s to new friendships, stronger collaborations, and memories worth cherishing. May the connections built continue to grow and create impactful opportunities in the future.

With full hearts and genuine joy, Dr. Hanif and the team from the UTM Bone Biomechanics Laboratory (UTM BBL) were honoured to deliver a prosthetic leg to our colleague and friend, Mr. Adi. This CSR effort means a lot to us because it reflects care, compassion, and the simple desire to help someone move forward.

Being part of Mr. Adi’s journey is truly special to us. We are happy and grateful to support him in gaining greater comfort, mobility, and independence, and we hope this contribution brings him confidence and positivity in his daily life. Moments like these remind us that kindness and teamwork can make a real difference.
