Sixth Session | Advance Diploma in Special Education
The sixth session of the Advance Diploma course focused on different types of exceptional needs.
Through understanding sensory, physical, medical, and acquired exceptional needs, we gain a deeper understanding of students’ individual needs, appropriate strategies, and effective classroom management approaches.
🌱 Key Takeaways from the Session:
☘️Visual and auditory impairments may create barriers in the classroom; however, as special educator, we understand that these challenges do not define a child’s potential or limit their learning.
☘️With appropriate intervention, accommodations, and strategies, we can support students in having a smoother learning and social experience.
☘️Supporting deafblind students requires specialised approaches such as tactile communication, consistency and routines, safety considerations, and intervener support.
☘️Assistive technology and environmental considerations can promote successful inclusion, including appropriate classroom layouts, transition settings, visual or tactile supports, and other individualised adaptations.
☘️Supporting students with multiple disabilities requires consideration of the interaction between different needs, team-based planning, and individualised programming.
☘️Educator awareness and trauma-informed responses are equally important in understanding students’ internalising and externalising behaviours, rather than simply viewing behaviour as a challenge.
☘️Key principles in supporting students with multiple disabilities include person-centred planning, family partnership, transdisciplinary teamwork, and functional goal setting.
✨ Inclusion of diverse needs is one of the beautiful parts of Special Education.
Through accommodations and modifications in learning materials, teaching approaches, and the environment, we can create opportunities for every child to learn at their own pace, in their own way, and with the right support.
Because inclusion is not about making every child learn the same way —
it is about creating the right conditions for every child to learn. 🌱
