In my opinion, lavender essential oil (and other oils for that matter) should be used in hospitals as part of standard of care. Lavender oil has been proven clinically to help manage pain and anxiety in hospital settings.

A recent clinical trial evaluated the lavender essential oil aided in the control of pain following abdominal surgery in individuals that received a regional nerve block. One drop of undiluted lavender oil was applied topically to the back of the neck, temple, ear, wrist, or other area of preference at each episode of reported surgical pain. Pain medication was administered at typical intervals but always before lavender oil application. The improvement in pain scores was a remarkable fivefold after aromatherapy in this subgroup of participants.
