A heart attack can happen to anyone regardless of age or s*x. Many people think it’s a disease that only affects the elderly, but increasingly we are seeing more and more young men and women who are struck with this life threatening disease. I just read a few days ago in an online news article, about a young 38yr old lady who recently presented with stomach discomfort, she thought it was “gastric” but was shocked to find out that it was a heart attack.

When my patient came to see me, he was initially worried about possible coronary heart blockage. However, on his echocardiogram, ultrasound of his heart - we discovered a completely different diagnosis: severe Aortic Valve Stenosis, thickening of his aortic valve instead.

Drug eluting stents or drug coated balloons - Which is better? During a coronary angioplasty procedure, a drug eluting stent is traditionally implanted as it provides good scaffolding / support, deliver drugs and has been shown to be safe and effective in terms of reducing renarrowing (disease recurrence).

Newer technology using drug coated balloons provide an attractive alternative as drugs are delivered after an angioplasty procedure without the need for a stent (no permanent device is left behind)…However is this new technology suitable for everyone? Find out more here..
