Not sure how to respond when someone comes to you when they are not okay? Below are some suggestions:
“I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. Do you want to talk about what’s going on?”
“Thanks for telling me. What’s been going on?”
“I’m listening.”
“I’m here for you. Do you want to talk, or would you rather just have some company?”
If they don’t want to talk, you might say:
“That’s okay. Just know I’m here if you change your mind.”
“You don’t have to explain everything right now.”
“Would it help if we just sat together for a bit?”
If they seem overwhelmed or distressed, or feel like they may be in danger,
“I’m really glad you told me. Are you thinking about hurting yourself?”
“Is there anyone you trust that you can contact?”
