Selamat Hari Kebangsaan ke-69, Malaysia.
Today, we celebrate our home, our people, our progress, and everything that brings us together as Malaysians.
But perhaps Merdeka can also be a moment to pause and ask: Malaysians, how are we?
Not only as a nation, but in our health.
This year, we looked at some of the latest available data on diabetes, hypertension, overweight and obesity, and chronic kidney disease in Malaysia.
Some of the numbers deserve our attention.
Perhaps one of the most important is this: an estimated 50.4% of Malaysian adults living with diabetes may be undiagnosed.
Because some health risks can develop quietly, knowing our numbers matters.
Blood glucose. Blood pressure. Cholesterol. Weight and waist measurements. And the health screenings appropriate for our age, history and individual risk.
Merdeka is a celebration of how far we have come.
It can also be a reminder to think about where we want to go next — for ourselves, our families, and the generations after us.
This year, amid the celebration, make time to check in with your health. Speak with a healthcare professional about which screenings may be appropriate for you.
Awareness is where prevention begins.
And next Merdeka, Meeve will ask the question again:
Malaysians, How Are We?
Here’s to continued progress and a healthier, stronger Malaysia.
Selamat Hari Kebangsaan. 🇲🇾
