I read this article and it honestly hit me.
It asks a simple but uncomfortable question:
When parents are old, which child do they usually rely on to take care of them?
The answer most young people gave wasn’t “the most successful” or “the most loving”.
It was the least favoured one — the child who is less likely to say no.
Not because parents don’t love their children,
but because long-term care is exhausting, emotional, and never equal.
Over time, responsibility quietly falls on the one who sacrifices the most.
This is why I always say:
elder care should not be decided by guilt, personality, or who is “stronger”.
That’s also where OAD (long-term care planning) comes in.
OAD isn’t about replacing family love.
It’s about protecting it.
When care is planned:
children don’t have to give up their careers or marriages
siblings don’t quietly resent each other
parents keep their dignity and independence
Without planning, families rely on emotions.
With planning, families rely on structure.
To me, real filial piety today isn’t “who sacrifices more” —
it’s planning early so no one has to.
Just sharing a thought.
This topic deserves more honest conversations.
