In partnership with 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 and endorsed by the 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 & 𝗛𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, the session sparked crucial conversations on modernising liver cancer screening.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀:

▪ 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗶 𝗖. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗵 (𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆) emphasised that the biggest challenge in HCC is late detection, leaving patients diagnosed at advanced stages with limited curative options.

▪ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗼' 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗶 𝗠𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 (𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗛𝗖𝗧𝗠 𝗨𝗞𝗠) highlighted that liver cancer aetiologies are rapidly shifting from viral hepatitis toward metabolic conditions particularly like MASLD/MASH, driven by rising obesity and type 2 diabetes in Malaysia.

▪ 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗵 𝗞𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴 (𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁 & 𝗛𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗖 & 𝗨𝗠𝗦𝗖) noted the importance of identifying MASLD patients, with or without cirrhosis for HCC surveillance. Early lesions are often missed by standard ultrasonography in obese, fatty liver, or cirrhotic patients.

▪ 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Case studies by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮 𝗢𝗺𝗮𝗿 (𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁 & 𝗛𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴) demonstrated that metabolic liver changes stay silent. Moving beyond standard scans to blood-based risk stratification helps capture early pathological changes before progression to HCC.

▪ 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀: All the speakers also explored how integrating advanced biomarkers such as PIVKA-II and the GAAD algorithm can help bridge diagnostic gaps and support earlier detection of potentially treatable HCC.

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆: Shifting toward rapid molecular testing at the first point of contact for simultaneous TB and drug resistance detection.

𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗡𝗛 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: With local data showing Isoniazid (INH) resistance is more prevalent than Rifampicin, upfront diagnostic stewardship is critical to preventing treatment failure and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).

2. Genetics in Cardiac Care by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗘𝗱𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗮, 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, 𝗟𝗦𝗚 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸: Inherited cardiac conditions affect 1 in 100 people and are often understudied in Southeast Asia, increasing the risk of undiagnosed complications or sudden death.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Genetic testing covering familial hypercholesterolemia, heart muscle diseases, and arrhythmias enables early detection, guided treatment, and proactive family screening.

This event, successfully co-organised by Innoquest and Jesselton Medical Centre (JMC) also brought together a diverse panel of experts:

Prostate cancer is often called a "𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿" because it typically shows no symptoms in its early stages. In Malaysia, nearly 𝟲𝟯% of cases are diagnosed only at advanced stages.
