Have you ever wondered why two people can go through exactly the same situation, yet walk away feeling completely differently?
One becomes angry.
The other stays calm.
One sees rejection.
The other sees feedback.
One becomes afraid.
The other becomes curious.
The situation may be the same. But the memories processing that situation are not.
We often believe we are responding to what is happening now. But sometimes, without even realising it, we are also responding to what happened then.
Past experiences leave memories. Some are positive and empowering. Others carry fear, pain, disappointment, rejection or even trauma. When something happens today, our mind does not necessarily process it on a completely clean slate. It draws upon what has already been stored within us.
And that is where our biases can begin.
We don’t always see people and situations simply as they are. We may see them through the lens of what we have experienced before.
Perhaps that is why the same words can encourage one person and hurt another. Why one person trusts easily while another becomes suspicious. Why something that seems insignificant to you can trigger a powerful emotional reaction in someone else.
Before asking, “Why did I react like that?”
Perhaps there is a deeper question:
“What within me reacted to that?”
Sometimes the present is only the trigger.
The story behind the reaction may have begun a long time ago.
That is where change can begin.
