We went for dinner at a Chinese restaurant on Saturday (a place we go to every once in a while). There's usually a man who stands outside the restaurant and walks along the five foot way. He's been there each time we've gone. Most times, he stares outside towards the road and at times, he stares at the patrons. He usually looks grumpy, mutters to himself and appears to be mentally unwell.

Most of the time, we go in and have our meal, without paying much attention to him. This time he actually entered the restaurant and one of the waiters tapped him on the shoulder, indicating that he should go outside. We were already seated at our table by then. Ishaan (my youngest child) saw what happened (he was facing the inside) and gestured to the waiter that he shouldn't do that, by patting his own shoulder and waggling his finger to say "No" and telling us that the man would be angry. He then checked back with the man as if to say, "I've got you" by giving him a thumbs up.

I think this man was surprised that someone was defending him, that too, a little kid. After that, he gestured for Ishaan to eat his food and walked away, as Ishaan kept looking back to check on him. He only returned to his usual spot outside later, after we had finished our meal. When we left the restaurant, Ishaan gave him a high five and he had the biggest smile on his face (which was rare as I've only seen him with a grumpy expression).

To be very honest, we were cautious and watchful, as in the past, we've seen him exchange angry words and curse at the restaurant workers. Most of the time, he just stands outside at his usual spot, or walks along the walkway.

That man was touched by the fact that someone saw him as a person, instead of a problem to be dealt with. We were touched as well. Ishaan acknowledged his humanity with empathy and he responded to that.

Care and connection heals.

At our recent Walk With A Doc session on the 17th of May 2026, we discussed the importance of Vitamin D for overall health, particularly its role in bone strength, immunity, muscle function, mood, and chronic disease prevention.

We highlighted that despite Malaysia’s sunny climate, Vitamin D deficiency remains very common due to indoor lifestyles, sun avoidance, and sunscreen use. We also spoke about natural sources of Vitamin D, including sunlight exposure, fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods.

Participants were advised that the best time for sunlight exposure is generally between 10 am and 3 pm, when UVB rays are strongest for Vitamin D production, while balancing this with sensible sun protection (sunblock on the face, leaving arms and legs exposed for at least 15-20 minutes, slightly longer for those who are darker complexioned).

We further discussed the role of Vitamin D supplementation for individuals who are deficient or at higher risk, as well as emerging interest in infrared (IR) therapy as a supportive tool for wellness and recovery.

Some pics from my Emotional Fitness Workshop for Kids at The Little Play Area. I talked about emotions, the "lizard brain" (amygdala) that wants to keep us safe and how to mitigate tricky emotions via talking to someone about it (talk therapy) as well as the skill of mentalization (attributing causes for why they think/feel a certain way). I told them the legend of the worry doll and demonstrated how to make one. They made their own dolls after that.

I've always looked at Medicine as an Art, as well as a Science and I felt, in my bones, that there has to be a space for someone like me. Someone who no longer fits into the traditional clinician (GP) role or having that be my main or only role. This became very clear to me once my children came alo...

Clinical Psychologists (those with a Master of Clinical Psychology) can be found on the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychologists directory OR the Malaysian Allied Health Professions directory.

On that note, certain fields in Clinical Psychology are sub-specialties, i.e.; it requires a Master of Clinical Psychology first, before they can pursue sub-specialty (thus being registered on the directory is a given).

Some of the Clinical Psychology subspecialties are: Clinical Child/Adolescent Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology, Neuropsychology, Forensic Psychology, Geropsychology, and Behavioural/Cognitive Psychology. These psychologists are Clinical Psychologists with a special focus.

Registered counsellors can be found on the Direktori Kaunselor Berdaftar (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia).

In order to use the title "Dr.", an individual has to be either a medical doctor OR possess a PhD from a legitimate university.

In order to use the title Psychologist, an individual has to have a Masters level qualification (at least).

It's important to check the qualifications of mental health professionals (before engaging their services or inviting them to be speakers) as bogus practitioners can do more harm than good.

I will be conducting the Emotional Fitness for Children workshop again on the 16th of May 2026, at The Little Play Area, Mont Kiara. It's for kids (ages 6+-11+), to learn about emotions, how to manage/regulate them and there's a fun craft activity (creating their own worry doll) to reinforce what they learn. Small group, for better engagement, in an emotionally safe space. Please share. Thank you!
