Many women think menopause starts the moment periods stop, but the body often begins changing years earlier. This stage, called perimenopause, can happen while periods are still ongoing. As ovarian hormone activity becomes more variable and ovulation less predictable, cycles may become shorter, longer, heavier or lighter. Some women may also notice hot flashes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood or concentration changes, joint discomfort, vaginal or urinary symptoms, or shifts in body composition, while others experience very few changes at all.

Menopause itself is only confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, which means the transition may already have been unfolding for quite some time. That is why midlife health is about more than simply waiting for periods to stop. It is also worth paying attention to sleep, bone strength, cardiovascular health, body composition, sexual health, mental wellbeing and everyday function. GENE EDITING MAY NO LONGER REQUIRE STEM CELLS TO LEAVE THE BODY 🧬🎯

Gene editing for blood disorders has traditionally taken a complicated route. Doctors first collect a patient’s blood-forming stem cells, edit them outside the body in a specialised laboratory, and then return those modified cells to the patient. The science is powerful, but the process is intensive, costly and difficult to scale widely.

Researchers are now exploring a very different idea: what if the editing tools could travel directly to the stem cells instead? Blood-forming stem cells naturally live inside the bone marrow. Rather than removing them first, scientists are testing targeted delivery systems designed to carry CRISPR gene-editing cargo straight to that environment. In early preclinical studies, specialised lipid nanoparticles have been used as tiny delivery vehicles to help guide the editing machinery toward these stem cells.

If this strategy can be developed safely and reliably, it could change more than the editing technology itself. It could simplify the entire treatment pathway by reducing the need for complex cell collection, laboratory manipulation and reinfusion procedures. That could eventually make advanced gene-editing approaches easier to deliver across more centres and potentially more accessible to patients.

The research is still at an early stage, and this approach is not yet standard treatment in people. But the direction is important. Instead of bringing the patient’s stem cells to the gene-editing tools, scientists are working toward a future where the gene-editing tools go directly to the stem cells where they already live.

2 patients may receive the same cancer diagnosis, involving the same organ and even a similar stage, yet the biology driving their disease can be very different.

Cancer is not simply one uniform group of abnormal cells. Within a tumour, different cells can behave differently, activate different molecular pathways and rely on different signals to grow or survive. This biological variation is known as tumour heterogeneity, and it is one reason modern oncology increasingly looks beyond the diagnosis itself.

The question is no longer only, “What cancer is this?”
It is also, “What is this cancer biologically doing?”

To answer that, scientists can study molecular information such as genes, proteins and gene expression, which tells us which genes are actively being used by the cells. One important part of this picture is messenger RNA, or mRNA. mRNA acts like a temporary copy of a genetic instruction, carrying information that tells the cell which proteins to produce. When certain cancer-related genes become unusually active, their RNA activity can provide clues about the molecular processes taking place within that particular cancer.
