Stretching can be a great way to alleviate back pain. Here are a few stretches you can try on your own at home

1. Cat- Camel

This exercise works to improve the range of motion for extension and flexion. Start in all 4s and round the back by tilting the head downwards and tucking the hips in as well, a slight stretch on the lower back and a contraction of the abdominals will be felt as well. Reverse the movement by arching the back, remember to move from each segment of the back, lower, middle, and upper. Repeat this for 8-10 reps X 2 sets

2. Child pose

Start on your knees, round your back, and reach forward in front of you. Another cue that may help with feeling a stretch in the lower back is imagining a ball in between the stomach and the thighs. At the same time as you reach forward, push your hips back and try to sit on your heels. Repeat for 2 reps X 30 seconds

3. Piriformis stretch

This stretch can be performed in sitting or lying as well. If it is done while lying down, cross one leg over the other and pull the legs up towards you. A deep stretch will be felt on the glute muscles while performing this. Repeat for 2 reps X 30 seconds

These stretches are beneficial and can help with back pain. However, finding out the root cause of the problem and assessing your source of discomfort can help in preventing your pain over the long term.
