Another great afternoon talking about something we rarely think about — how technology is changing our bodies. 📱🦴

From tech neck and text thumb to prolonged sitting and poor posture, many of the aches and pains we see today are increasingly linked to the way we live and work.
Had a fantastic and very sporting group today — especially when everyone had to get up for the 60-second body reset! 😄

More importantly, we had some meaningful conversations about musculoskeletal health, prevention and when persistent pain deserves proper assessment.

Thank you for having me. Always happy to take orthopaedics outside the clinic and make it a little less... boring. 😄

Turning Our Healthcare Team into “Trauma Detectives” 🕵️‍♂️🦴

As Avisena Specialist Hospital 2 evolves from a Women & Children’s Hospital into a full-fledged specialist hospital, we are entering an exciting new chapter—one that also means being prepared to manage trauma patients.

Trauma can be unpredictable. A patient who appears stable initially can deteriorate, and in orthopaedic trauma, recognising the warning signs early can make a significant difference to the eventual outcome.

So, I decided to conduct a short and practical trauma session for our healthcare team, focusing on several important orthopaedic emergencies:

🔹 Open fractures – recognising fractures associated with open wounds and the importance of early management
🔹 Compartment syndrome – identifying the early warning signs before irreversible damage occurs
🔹 Fat embolism syndrome – recognising subtle changes that may indicate deterioration
🔹 Blood loss – understanding that significant bleeding may not always be immediately obvious
🔹 Nerve and vascular injuries – knowing what to look for and when to escalate urgently

My goal wasn't to turn everyone into orthopaedic surgeons. 😄

It was to turn them into “trauma detectives”—the eyes and ears of the specialist in the ward.

Our nurses and healthcare workers spend far more time at the patient's bedside than we do. Empowering them to recognise subtle changes, identify red flags and alert the treating team early is an essential part of providing safe trauma care.

What was meant to be a short teaching session turned into a very enjoyable and interactive discussion, with everyone asking questions, sharing experiences and participating openly.

I also took the opportunity to introduce myself to the team as I begin this new chapter at Avisena Specialist Hospital 2, Shah Alam.

Building a trauma service isn't just about having surgeons and operating theatres.

It starts with building a team that knows what to look for, when to worry, and when to act.

A great session with a great team—and hopefully the first of many more to come. 🦴💪

Excited to share a new chapter in my journey — I am now practicing as a Resident Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Avisena Specialist Hospital 2, Shah Alam.

I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to serving more patients with a continued focus on evidence-based, patient-centered orthopedic care.

❤️ "Kini Saya Boleh Berjalan Semula." – Kisah Seorang Pesakit

Selama berbulan-bulan, pesakit ini terpaksa menanggung sakit lutut yang berterusan sehingga aktiviti harian yang mudah menjadi sukar. Berjalan terasa sakit, kerja semakin terganggu, dan pergerakannya yang semakin terbatas mula menjejaskan kebebasan serta kualiti hidupnya. 😣🦵

Beliau telah berjumpa dengan beberapa orang doktor, tetapi masih berasa bimbang setelah dimaklumkan bahawa rawatan dan pembedahan mungkin melibatkan kos yang tinggi. Apabila sakit semakin berpanjangan dan pergerakan semakin terbatas, beliau akhirnya datang berjumpa Dr Ram untuk mendapatkan pandangan lanjut.

Semasa konsultasi, Dr Ram menerangkan dengan jelas tentang keadaan lututnya, pilihan rawatan, proses pembedahan dan apa yang boleh dijangkakan sepanjang tempoh pemulihan. Selepas memahami penerangan tersebut dan berasa lebih yakin, pesakit bersetuju untuk menjalani pembedahan penggantian sendi lutut.

Pada hari kedua selepas pembedahan, beliau sudah boleh berdiri, berjalan dengan bantuan dan memulakan latihan rehabilitasi. Dengan fisioterapi serta latihan penguatan secara berperingkat, sakit lututnya semakin berkurangan dan keyakinannya untuk berjalan kembali meningkat. 💪🚶

Kini, hanya 14 hari selepas pembedahan, beliau sudah boleh berjalan dengan lebih mudah dan menjalankan aktiviti harian dengan lebih selesa. Perjalanan pemulihannya menunjukkan bahawa rawatan yang betul, penerangan yang jelas dan komitmen terhadap rehabilitasi boleh membawa perubahan yang besar.

Setiap pesakit mempunyai perjalanan pemulihan yang berbeza, tetapi anda tidak perlu terus hidup dengan sakit sendi.
