Strengthening Patient Mobility: Divine Mercy Assembly Donates Wheelchair to ABSUTH.

Members of Divine Mercy Assembly have demonstrated compassion and community support through the donation of a wheelchair to Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH).

The Assembly was represented by Pastor Mrs. Gift Gabriel, who officially presented the wheelchair to the hospital management. Receiving the donation on behalf of the institution was the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Prof. P.E.N. Onyemachi, alongside key members of the management staff, including the Director of Nursing Services (DNS), Esther Aguochu,
Pst. Iheme Chidebere, and Mrs. Alaoma Kate HOD publics Relations.

Pastor Gift Gabriel presented the wheelchair as part of her missionary contribution to support patient care at ABSUTH. In his remarks while officially receiving the item, the CMAC, Prof. P.E.N. Onyemachi, commended the donor for her thoughtfulness, emphasizing the vital role public-spirited individuals and faith-based organizations play in healthcare support.
On behalf of the hospital management, we express our sincere appreciation to Pastor Mrs. Gift Gabriel and Divine Mercy Assembly for this noble gesture. Wheelchairs are critical mobility assets in clinical care, especially in emergency and critical care settings. I assure you that this equipment will be deployed and utilized efficiently.

Following the presentation, the management team led the representatives to the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Extension, where the wheelchair will be stationed for immediate use. The department received the equipment with joy and gratitude, with the A&E Extension Nurse Ward Manager, Nurse Wogu Uchenna H., accepting it on behalf of the department.

This donation directly aligns with ABSUTH’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality, and compassionate healthcare to the community. *ABIA SPECIALIST HOSPITAL RECORDS HISTORIC FIRST MAJOR BRAIN SURGERY*

The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, has recorded a major milestone in specialist healthcare delivery with the successful performance of its first major brain surgery.

The historic operation was carried out on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on a 19-year-old male patient who was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state following a road traffic accident involving a moving tricycle.

Medical investigations revealed a life-threatening collection of blood within the patient’s skull, requiring urgent neurosurgical intervention.

The four-hour emergency surgery, which lasted from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., involved opening the skull to evacuate the blood collection and control further bleeding.

The procedure was successfully performed by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team, comprising Dr. Uko Kalu Uko, Professor Enoch Uche, the anaesthetic team led by Dr. Nosike Erondu, and other dedicated medical professionals.

Following the operation, the patient was transferred to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where he is currently making satisfactory postoperative recovery.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Chimezie Godswill Okwuonu, described the development as a significant milestone in the hospital’s drive to provide advanced specialist healthcare services to the people of Abia State.

He said the achievement demonstrates the importance of visionary leadership, strategic investment, modern medical equipment and the dedication of healthcare professionals.

The milestone is also coming on the heels of the ongoing efforts of the Abia State Government, under Governor Alex Chioma Otti, to retrofit, equip and reposition public health institutions across the state for advanced medical care.

The State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Oghonnaya Uche, has also continued to support efforts aimed at strengthening the state’s health institutions in line with the administration’s healthcare transformation agenda.

The successful brain surgery marks another significant step towards making advanced specialist healthcare accessible to residents of Abia State without the need to travel outside the state for critical medical interventions.

For the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, the achievement signals a new chapter in specialist healthcare delivery, where improved infrastructure and modern equipment are being transformed into clinical capacity, quality service and ultimately, lives saved.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Living Faith Church Donates Mobility Equipment to ABSUTH.

In a heartwarming gesture of community support and social responsibility, yesterday, representatives from the Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), Osisioma Aba Headquarters, paid an official visit to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) to donate vital mobility equipment to patients in need.

The church delegation was led by the Traffic Unit Leader, Brother Charles Adiele, alongside the Gilead Medical Unit Team Leader, Dr. Uzo Oguine, During the presentation, the team handed over 2 wheelchairs and 2 crutches (walking aids) to assist patients who are desperately in need of mobility support.

Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Oguine highlighted the core motivation behind the visit, explaining that as part of their outreach, the church seeks to evangelize and touch lives practically through acts of compassion and medical support.

The management and staff of ABSUTH were represented by the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC); Prof PEN Onyemachi alongside the Director of Nursing Services: DNS Esther Aguocha.
On behalf of the hospital management, the CMAC expressed deep gratitude to Living Faith Church for remembering ABSUTH and assured the delegation that the donated equipment would be judiciously utilized to improve patient care.

Following the formal presentation:
1 Wheelchair was immediately allocated to the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department to support urgent patient transport.
The second wheelchair and the walking crutches were designated for general hospital needs to assist patients.

A high-level delegation from the Abia State Health Insurance Agency (ABSHIA) Umuahia last week Friday visited the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, to carry out a comprehensive sensitization exercise for the state’s health insurance programs.

The ABSHIA delegation was led by Miss Ijeoma Uruakpa and her Team. The team engaged in extensive deliberations with the management of ABSUTH, including heads of departments, unit heads, and administrative leadership across all hospital divisions. The immediate outcome of this visit was both swift and significant: ABSUTH staff across all departments successfully registered as enrollees under the scheme, granting them immediate financial protection and direct access to qualitative healthcare services.

This strategic exercise highlights ABSHIA’s commitment to its vision of becoming a world-class organization that provides robust financial risk protection to every resident of Abia State. The agency's core mission centers on expanding access to affordable healthcare through collaborative frameworks designed to cushion families against catastrophic out-of-pocket medical expenses.

ABSUTH occupies a vital position within the state's medical infrastructure. Fully accredited by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), ABSUTH is structured to deliver primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare services. This allows enrollees to access general outpatient care, preventive health services, specialized diagnostics, inpatient care, and complex surgical procedures within a single medical institution.

This healthcare expansion operates under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, whose administration has prioritized health insurance as a pillar of social welfare. To back this vision, the Abia State Government released ₦500 million in counterpart funding to operationalize the formal sector health insurance scheme. These initiatives extend across all cadres, including the formal sector, informal sector workers, tertiary institution students through dedicated health insurance programs, and vulnerable populations under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).

ABSUTH hereby calls on civil servants, informal sector workers, and the general public to step forward and register as enrollees under the scheme. Members of the public can visit ABSUTH to pick up their enrollment forms and designate ABSUTH as their primary healthcare facility, guaranteeing access to comprehensive, top-tier medical care whenever needed.

ABSUTH Receives Legislative Delegation from the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Health, on a Strategic Oversight Visit.

Yesterday, 16th September 2026, The Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Health conducted a strategic oversight visit to Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, the committee; led by Chairman Hon. Emeka Obioma: inspected the ongoing construction projects to assess progress and align operational goals with the state's healthcare roadmap.

The high-powered legislative delegation included Hon. Emeka Obioma (Chairman, Committee on Health representing Umuahia South State Constituency and Chief Whip of the 8th Assembly), Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mbah (representing Ohafia South State Constituency), Hon. Umeh Mathias (representing Umunneochi State Constituency), Mrs. Glory Ndubuisi (Committee Secretary), and Mr. Amuzie Osinachi (Assistant Secretary). They were warmly received by the ABSUTH management team, led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Nneka Okoronkwo, alongside key principal officers including the CMAC, Prof PEN Onyemachi, the Director of Administration - Princess Ihuoma Nwagbara, the Director of Finance - Mrs. Ngozi Fred, and the Head of Public Relations - Mrs. Alaoma Kate.

Driven by an eagerness to witness the ongoing transformations at ABSUTH under our health-friendly Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), the visit commenced with an extensive facility tour focused on the world-class hospital building currently under construction. The delegation paid particular attention to the Radiology Block, where a state-of-the-art MRI machine is slated for installation. During discussions with the site engineer, Hon. Obioma stressed that the building must be completed without delay so the installation can proceed smoothly. In addition, the CMD; Prof. Nneka Okoronkwo appealed to the engineering team to put all hands on deck, noting that concluding the structure is the critical step needed to bring the high-tech equipment into full operation. The site Engineer in response, promised that the he will put in his best to ensure swift completion.

Following the inspection, both teams converged at the CMD’s Conference Room for an interactive session. The Committee Secretary, Mrs. Glory Ndubuisi acknowledged the tight legislative schedules that previously constrained their visit, while Hon. Obioma reiterated the committee’s duty to ensure that state health institutions meet the rising expectations of the new Abia. He affirmed that the legislature views ABSUTH as a strategic partner, monitoring project delivery, revenue, and budget ex*****on to safeguard state investments. He further noted that His Excellency, the Executive Governor, holds high expectations for the hospital's development, adding that steps are already underway as necessary contacts have been made to ASEPA to supply dedicated waste management infrastructure for the facility and proper Ambulance infrastructure.

Expressing gratitude for the legislative visit, Prof. Okoronkwo underscored its immense relevance to the hospital’s immediate future. She highlighted space constraints as a pressing challenge impacting critical accreditation processes, emphasizing that the completion of the new block will unlock key expansion milestones. Ultimately, this collaborative engagement reflects a shared commitment between the legislative arm and hospital management to accelerate infrastructure development, elevate healthcare delivery, and expand quality medical services for the people of Abia State.

ABSUTH TAKES STROKE PREVENTION MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY AS PHYSIOTHERAPISTS MARK WORLD PHYSIOTHERAPY DAY 2026

The Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), through its Physiotherapy Department, in conjunction with the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP), Abia State Chapter, has taken the message of stroke prevention directly to the community as part of activities marking World Physiotherapy Day 2026.

With this year’s global focus on ”Stroke Prevention,” the team moved beyond the hospital environment to sensitise members of the public around the hospital, neighbouring streets and markets, creating awareness about the risk factors for stroke, the importance of physical activity, healthy lifestyle choices and the need for early medical intervention.

The outreach reflects a fundamental principle of modern healthcare: prevention and health education must reach people before they become patients.

KNOW THE SIGNS — REMEMBER FAST

A major component of the sensitisation was the FAST acronym, a simple tool for recognising some of the most common warning signs of stroke:

F — Face: Check for facial drooping, especially on one side.
A — Arm: Check for sudden weakness or numbness in one arm.
S — Speech: Check for slurred, confused or difficult speech.
T — Time: If any of these signs are present, time is critical. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.

The team also emphasised that stroke prevention begins with everyday actions — staying physically active, managing long-term health conditions, making healthier lifestyle choices and seeking professional guidance on safe and appropriate exercise.

Taking the campaign to markets and surrounding communities provided an opportunity to engage people in familiar environments and make potentially life-saving health information accessible beyond the traditional hospital setting.
