NCCP, Mayo Clinic and National Hospital Abuja Unite to Tackle Cancer Burden.

The National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) Technical Working Group (TWG), chaired by Professor Folakemi Titilayo Odedina, alongside members of the Mayo Clinic, USA Advisory Board, paid a strategic visit to the National Hospital Abuja to assess its oncology facilities and explore opportunities for collaboration in cancer control, research, clinical trials and patient support.

Speaking during the meeting, Professor Odedina said the visit was aimed at assessing the hospital's readiness and identifying opportunities for collaboration that can strengthen cancer control and help reduce cancer-related deaths in Nigeria by 2030.

She noted that the NCCP TWG is working to establish global partnerships, including institutions such as the University of Maryland, Mayo Clinic, Fox Chase Cancer Center and VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. She explained that these partnerships could lead to Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and collaborating institutions to support research, clinical trials, capacity building and other sustainable cancer-control interventions.

Professor Odedina also highlighted the importance of workforce readiness, research capacity, and preparedness for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and data in cancer control. She said the TWG is conducting surveys to understand the capacity and needs of institutions, noting that the information will help provide visibility to strategic partners and facilitate targeted support and collaboration.

She further highlighted the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Support Programme, which provides financial assistance to selected cancer patients for essential non-medical needs such as transportation and feeding.

Professor Odedina said the overall objective of the partnerships and initiatives is to strengthen Nigeria's cancer-control system, improve access to quality care and ultimately reduce cancer fatalities by 2030.

Responding on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Professor Muhammad Raji Mahmud, the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Olayinka Isiaka Lawal, appreciated the delegation for its commitment to improving cancer care and supporting patients. He affirmed the readiness of the National Hospital Abuja to collaborate with the NCCP TWG and its partners and provide the necessary institutional support to advance cancer-control initiatives.

Following the meeting, the delegation proceeded on an inspection tour of relevant oncology facilities within the National Hospital Abuja to assess existing capacity and readiness for potential clinical trials, research activities and future collaborative programmes.

National Hospital Abuja Trains House Officers on SERVICOM/Public Relations.
The Department of Information and Protocol, National Hospital Abuja, organized a SERVICOM training programme for House Officers to enhance service delivery through professionalism, compassion, and courtesy towards patients.
In his opening remarks, the Head of the Information and Protocol Department, AD Adamu Maijama'a, said the training was aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services by promoting ethical conduct and patient-centred care. He emphasized that healthcare workers are committed to serving patients and their relatives with dignity and compassion. He encouraged participants to ask questions and actively engage throughout the session.
The SERVICOM Nodal Officer, DD Rabiah Muhammad Bello in her remarks welcomed the House Officers and reiterated that the training was approved by the Hospital Management and organized through the collaborative efforts of the Information and Protocol Department, and the SERVICOM Unit of the hospital. She added that the programme was designed to equip frontline officers with the knowledge and skills required to communicate effectively and uphold professional ethics in their interactions with patients.
The training was facilitated by AD Gidado Adamu, who delivered two presentations on SERVICOM principles and the importance of Public relations in healthcare service delivery.
The programme was highly interactive, with participants sharing their experiences, discussing workplace challenges, and exploring practical ways to improve patient care and service delivery in the hospital.

National Hospital Abuja Marks World Breastfeeding Week with Awareness Campaign

The National Hospital, Abuja, has joined the global community in commemorating World Breastfeeding Week, observed annually from August 1 to 7, with an awareness campaign aimed at promoting the importance and benefits of breastfeeding.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Consultant Paediatrician and Head of the Paediatrics Department at the National Hospital, Dr. Otubelu E.C.U., said this year's celebration provides an opportunity to strengthen public awareness of the life-saving benefits of breastfeeding.

Dr. Otubelu explained that the hospital organized an awareness walk across various departments, including the wards, clinics, and emergency unit, to reinforce awareness among healthcare workers, mothers, and the general public on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.

He noted that breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition for newborns, strengthens their immune systems, protects them against infections, and supports faster recovery from illness. According to him, the importance of breastfeeding cannot be overemphasized, describing it as the best form of nourishment for every infant.

The Head of Department reaffirmed the National Hospital's commitment to promoting breastfeeding-friendly practices, stating that the awareness campaign is designed not only to educate members of the hospital community but also to remind the wider public of the numerous health benefits associated with breastfeeding.

He thanked all participants who took part in the awareness walk and encouraged continued support for initiatives that promote breastfeeding as the foundation for healthier children, families, and communities.

National Hospital Abuja successfully conducted the Post Basic Nursing Oncology and Nephrology Entrance Examination, marking another important step in its commitment to developing highly skilled specialist nurses.

On behalf of the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Muhammad Raji Mahmud, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Isiaka Olayinka Lawal, welcomed the candidates and commended them for choosing National Hospital Abuja for their specialist nursing training.

He described nurses as the backbone of quality healthcare delivery and reaffirmed the hospital's reputation as a leading tertiary healthcare institution, renowned for excellence in medical services, nursing education, and world-class facilities.

Dr. Isiaka Olayinka Lawal also emphasized that the admission process would be transparent, fair, and merit-based, encouraging all candidates to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism throughout the exercise.

FMWRS Commissions Public Toilet Facility at the National Hospital Abuja
The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has commissioned a modern public toilet facility constructed for the use of both staff and patients at the National Hospital, Abuja. The facility is equipped with a water storage tank powered by solar energy to ensure a reliable water supply for efficient flushing and improved sanitation.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Olu-Daniels Ibiyemi, Director II, Quality Control and Sanitation Department, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, stated that the project forms part of the Federal Government's commitment to ending open defecation in Nigeria under the National Action Plan aimed at achieving an Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2030.

He explained that the project also aligns with the government's efforts to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera by improving access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities. According to him, the National Hospital had requested the facility, which was subsequently constructed in 2025. He noted that the commissioning officially marks the handover of the project to the hospital management for ownership, operation and maintenance. On behalf of the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, he formally presented the keys to the hospital management.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital Abuja, Professor Muhammad Raji Mahmud, expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation for the timely intervention. He described the project as a welcome development that addressed a critical need within the hospital.
Professor Mahmud explained that the hospital had previously conceived plans to construct additional toilet facilities due to the high number of patients and visitors it receives daily. He noted that the Ministry's intervention came at the right time and significantly improved access to sanitation within the hospital.

He revealed that while the hospital initially planned to build one or two toilet facilities, the Ministry provided eight modern toilet units complete with a solar-powered water system, greatly enhancing sanitation services within the hospital.

Beyond the health and hygiene benefits, Professor Mahmud stated that the facility would also have a positive social impact by enhancing the comfort and dignity of patients, visitors and staff. He described the project as an excellent example of successful inter-agency collaboration aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.

He thanked the Ministry for its support and expressed hope for continued collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and other government agencies. He assured the Ministry that the National Hospital would always be willing to support future partnerships in any way possible.

The CMD further disclosed that the hospital is undergoing expansion and expressed optimism that by this time next year, additional facilities of similar size would be required to meet the growing demand for healthcare services.

Also in attendance at the commissioning were Engr. Joseph-Ojobo, Assistant Director, Water Engineering, and Mr Joseph Umo-Otong, Chief Geologist, both from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, as well as members of the Top Management Committee of the National Hospital, Abuja.
