PLEASE STOP! Adding UNRIPE PLANTAIN to your SOYBEAN POWDER
It does NOT automatically make it more nutritious!
I know this might upset some people, but let's talk nutrition—not tradition.
You may hear:
“Soybean + unripe plantain = more nutrients.”
But wait… what are you trying to achieve with the mixture?
Soybean is already an excellent source of plant protein.
Unripe plantain is predominantly a carbohydrate-rich food, with starch and fibre.
So when you add a substantial amount of unripe plantain to soybean powder, you're adding a carbohydrate-rich ingredient to a protein-rich ingredient.
That can reduce the protein concentration per 100 g of the final blend compared with using soybean alone.
And here's the part many people miss:
Adding more ingredients doesn't automatically mean a better formulation.
The nutritional quality of a food blend depends on:
The ingredients
Their proportions
Processing method
The intended consumer
The nutritional goal of the product
So if you're producing a soybean-based protein powder, don't just add unripe plantain because someone said it makes the product “more nutritious.” or it contains Iron
FORMULATE WITH PURPOSE.
And NO—I'm not saying unripe plantain is bad! 😂
It's a nutritious food and can be incorporated into meals. The issue is what proportion you're using and what you're trying to achieve.
Let's settle this:
If you were making a soybean-based powder, would you add unripe plantain? YES or NO?
