QUESTION:
"I am a pedestrian. I always walk on the road because there is no sidewalk. Whose fault is it if a car hits me?"

UNCLE OLU'S ANSWER:

This is one of the most common and most tragic situations on our roads — especially in developing countries where sidewalks simply do not exist.

Legally, a pedestrian walking on the road where there is no sidewalk has a right to be there. BUT this is critical — having a right does 'not make you safe'. The man who was right on the road has since been buried.

As a pedestrian without a sidewalk:
✅ Always walk FACING oncoming traffic so you can see what's coming
✅ Stay as far to the edge of the road as possible
✅ Wear bright or reflective clothing at night
✅ Never assume a driver has seen you — EVER
✅ Avoid walking on the road while using your phone

The road was originally designed for everyone — but vehicles have gradually taken ownership. Until infrastructure improves, your safety is YOUR responsibility.

QUESTION:
"My teenage son just got his licence. He thinks he's a perfect driver already. How do I make him understand he's not?"

UNCLE OLU'S ANSWER:

This is every parent's nightmare — and every teenager's blind spot.

Here is the truth: A driving licence means you have passed a TEST. It does not mean you can drive. Real driving skill comes from years of experience, thousands of kilometres, and encounters with situations no test can simulate.

Statistically, new drivers aged 17-24 are the MOST dangerous drivers on the road. Not because they lack skill — but because they have OVERCONFIDENCE without EXPERIENCE.

What parents should do:
✅ Drive WITH your teenager regularly for at least 6 months after they get their licence
✅ Let them drive in rain, at night, on highways — under your supervision
✅ Set rules: No phone. No speeding. No extra passengers for the first year
✅ Share real crash stories — emotion teaches faster than lectures
✅ Introduce them to FSARC — give them a SYSTEM, not just rules

A licence is permission to learn. Mastery takes years.

QUESTION:
"As a cyclist, cars don't respect me on the road. I feel invisible. What can I do?"

UNCLE OLU'S ANSWER:

You are not imagining it. Cyclists ARE invisible to many drivers — and this invisibility is deadly.

The problem is simple: Most drivers are trained to look for other CARS, not cyclists. A cyclist occupies a fraction of the space, moves at different speeds, and can appear in blind spots that drivers never check.

As a cyclist, you must make yourself VISIBLE and PREDICTABLE:
✅ Wear bright, reflective clothing — always
✅ Use front and rear lights, even during the day
✅ Ride in a straight, predictable line — don't weave between vehicles
✅ Make eye contact with drivers at junctions before proceeding
✅ Use hand signals for every turn
✅ NEVER ride with earphones — your ears are your mirrors
✅ Assume every car door will open — ride at least 1 metre from parked cars

As a driver, you have a duty to LOOK for cyclists:
✅ Check mirrors before turning or opening your door
✅ Give cyclists at least 1.5 metres when overtaking
✅ A cyclist is someone's child, parent, or spouse — treat them accordingly

My 4-Weeks Free Road Safety Community Training: Duties of a Driver

🚦 DAY 3: DUTIES OF A DRIVER
🔥 Your biggest duty as a driver is NOT to reach your destination, but to arrive safely with all your passengers. (an agreement)
📘 Teaching:
Your first duty is:
1. To preserve life, yours and others.
2. Core duties:
3. Stay alert always
4. Obey traffic laws
5. Protect passengers
6. Respect other road users
7. Avoid unnecessary risks

Most Important are 7 Core Duties of Every Driver 🚗
1. Duty of Control
You must be in full control of your vehicle at all times. That means: both hands on the wheel, right speed, right lane position, and sober mind. If the car is moving, you’re responsible.

2. Duty of Care
You owe care to everyone: passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, other drivers. Safety isn’t 99.9%. It’s 100%. Your actions can protect or harm someone else’s family.

3. Duty of Observation
Eyes up, scan 360°. Check mirrors every 5-8 seconds. Look ahead 12-15 seconds, not just at the car in front. The road talks — potholes, kids, okada, brake lights. You must listen with your eyes.

4. Duty of Anticipation
Don’t just react. Predict. Expect the bike to swerve. Expect the car to brake suddenly. Expect the child to run. FSARC System starts here: _Forecast_ danger before it happens.

5. Duty of Compliance
Obey traffic laws, signs, signals, road markings. Speed limits aren’t suggestions. “But I have right of way” won’t heal you in hospital. Laws exist to keep you alive.

6. Duty of Vehicle Condition
Your vehicle must be roadworthy. Tyres, brakes, lights, wipers, horn. If your car isn’t fit, you’re not fit to drive. Check before you move — that’s why Sweden has almost zero road deaths.

7. Duty of Decision
Every second on the road, you’re making decisions. Speed up or slow down? Over-take or wait? Be patient or be right? Choose safety over ego. The man who was “right” is often buried first.

“Driving is not a right. It’s a responsibility.”
Because, Rights don’t save lives. Duties do.

🚶‍♂️ DAY 2: WHO IS A PEDESTRIAN?

🔥 You may think you are not a road user… but every single one of us is a pedestrian.

📘 Teaching: A pedestrian is:

Any person who is walking, standing, or moving on the road without a vehicle.

This includes:

People walking along the road

People crossing the road

People standing by the roadside

Even you… before entering your car

💡 Deep Insight: Before you became a driver… you were a pedestrian.

And after you park your car… you become a pedestrian again.

👉 This means:Everyone is a pedestrian first.

⚠️ The Problem: Most pedestrians:

Don’t look properly before crossing

Assume drivers will stop

Use phones while walking

Cross at dangerous points

👉 And many drivers:

Don’t respect pedestrians

Don’t slow down near crossings

Ignore human life

💥 Result: Accidents. Injuries. Loss, and casualty.

🧠 Professional Truth (From Experience): In my 33+ years in road safety—including working at the highest level, I can tell you...

Many accidents are caused by poor interaction between drivers and pedestrians.

🎯 Key Principle:

Road safety is a shared responsibility.

Drivers must protect pedestrians.Pedestrians must protect themselves.
