Today is World Hepatitis Day 2026, and this year’s theme is “Hepatitis: Let’s break it down.”
Let’s break down the hard facts: More than 20 million Nigerians are living with viral hepatitis, and the majority are unaware of their status. In Nigeria, the national immunisation schedule includes a vaccine only for Hepatitis B, which is provided free of charge to newborns and children under five. While Hepatitis B cannot currently be cured, it can be effectively managed with lifelong treatment. Hepatitis C, however, has no vaccine but is completely curable with appropriate treatment.
Because we don’t have a single vaccine for every type, testing remains our ultimate shield. We must break down the high diagnostic costs and the stigma keeping people in the dark.
Take action for your liver health today:
- Get vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
- Get tested to know your exact type and status.
- Break the silence—share this truth with someone today!
