A strategic step forward for nutrition in Nigeria!

The National Council on Nutrition has adopted the 10-year National Policy on Food and Nutrition (2026–2035), advancing it to the Federal Executive Council for ratification. With coordination led by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and leadership from Kashim Shettima, this marks a shift toward a more unified, government-driven nutrition agenda.

What stands out is the ex*****on focus: clear timelines for states and the FCT to establish nutrition councils, stronger multi-sector alignment, and a deliberate push to drive impact across all 774 LGAs.

For the nutrition ecosystem, the message is clear- this is the moment to align efforts, strengthen partnerships, and scale solutions that deliver measurable outcomes, especially for women and children.

Policy is the foundation. Implementation will define the impact.

Measles remains one of the most contagious diseases globally and far too many children are still at risk!

According to the World Health Organization:
• 95,000 deaths were recorded in 2024, mostly among unvaccinated children under five
• Despite an 88% decline since 2000, progress is slipping
• 11 million infections occurred in 2024 - nearly 800,000 above pre-pandemic levels

This rise signals a dangerous gap in immunization coverage.

Measles can lead to severe complications, especially in malnourished children, where weakened immunity increases the risk of death.

The Way Forward?
• Strengthen routine and catch-up vaccination
• Improve community awareness and access
• Integrate nutrition support into immunization programs

At INAI, we emphasize that vaccines save lives but nutrition sustains them. A well-nourished child is better protected, better able to recover, and more likely to thrive.

As we mark World Immunization Week, the message is clear:
Close the gaps. Strengthen systems. Protect every child.

When we protect women’s health, we protect the health of entire communities!

Every two minutes, a woman dies from cervical cancer - a largely preventable disease caused by Human papillomavirus.

As we mark World Immunization Week, an initiative of the World Health Organization - this is a moment to reaffirm a critical truth: investing in women’s health is foundational to sustainable public health.

Across many contexts, women and girls face heightened vulnerability due to barriers in access to healthcare, nutrition, and preventive services. The loss of women to preventable diseases like cervical cancer does more than impact individuals - it disrupts families, weakens community resilience, and places additional strain on already fragile health systems.

At INAI, we emphasize that:
• Vaccination against HPV is a powerful tool to safeguard women’s health
• Good nutrition strengthens immune response and supports vaccine effectiveness
• Protecting women’s health directly supports child health, household nutrition, and broader development outcomes

This is not just about prevention - it is about preservation of human capital, care systems, and future generations.

Because when women are protected, nourished, and empowered, societies are stronger, healthier, and more resilient.

Let us champion integrated solutions that prioritize women and ensuring they have access to both life-saving vaccines and the nutrition they need to thrive.

The numbers are alarming and impossible to ignore!

A recent report by UNICEF reveals that millions of children around the world are on the verge of starvation, with over 35 million acutely malnourished and 10 million facing severe wasting- the most immediate and life-threatening form of malnutrition.

But this is not just a food crisis.
It is a systems challenge that we have the capacity to solve.

Food crises rapidly evolve into nutrition emergencies, driven by conflict, insecurity, displacement, disease outbreaks, and limited access to essential services such as healthcare, safe water, sanitation, and nutrition support.

At INAI, we believe this moment demands more than awareness - it calls for intentional, coordinated action.

We must:
• Strengthen community-based nutrition systems
• Scale access to life-saving interventions
• Champion policies that prioritize child nutrition
• Invest in sustainable, locally driven solutions

Encouragingly, the pathway forward is clear and progress is within reach when efforts are aligned and sustained.

In a world of abundance, no child should suffer from malnutrition.

Now is the time to move from insight to impact. From commitment to measurable change!

Shaping Healthier Food Environments: Nigeria Moves Forward on Sodium Reduction!

Excess sodium consumption remains a leading dietary risk factor driving the global rise in non-communicable diseases. In Nigeria, this challenge is increasingly urgent and decisive action is underway.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a bold and commendable step by advancing the Reduction of Sodium in Pre-Packaged Foods Regulations (2026)- a policy direction aligned with global best practices for improving population health outcomes.

At INAI, we recognize this as a pivotal moment for nutrition policy and public health transformation.

What this means:
• Defined sodium limits in processed foods
• Clear, transparent labeling
• Reformulation driven by accountability

With rising dependence on processed foods, reducing sodium intake is no longer optional - it is urgent!

We commend the leadership of Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye and the push for collaborative, evidence-based implementation.

This is more than policy. It’s prevention. It’s protection. It’s progress.

Advocacy Must Lead to Accountability.

Advocacy should not end with conversations, it must lead to action and accountability.

Some practical ways highlighted during the webinar include:
• Tracking nutrition and agriculture budget allocations
• Monitoring commitments made by institutions
• Publishing youth accountability reports
• Engaging media to keep nutrition on the public agenda
• Following up after dialogues with policymakers

Real change happens when commitments are tracked, measured, and sustained.

Because advocacy is not just about raising voices, it’s about ensuring promises turn into real impact!

Change Happens at the Community Level!

One key takeaway from the webinar was the importance of working closely with grassroot communities.

This includes:
• Engaging community leaders and local organizations
• Working through Primary Health Care (PHC) systems
• Understanding the real challenges families face

Policies may be written in offices, but impact is created in communities.

The closer advocacy is to the people, the stronger and more sustainable it becomes!

Data is the Backbone of Advocacy!
Advocacy becomes powerful when it is grounded in evidence.

During the webinar, speakers emphasized that effective nutrition advocacy starts with credible data and clear messaging.

This means:
• Gathering reliable evidence on nutrition challenges
• Translating complex data into simple, digestible insights
• Using infographics, short videos, and storytelling to communicate impact

When evidence is communicated effectively, it does more than inform.
It inspires action!

One powerful message from the Youth and Nutrition Advocacy Webinar was clear:

Youth engagement must go beyond tokenism!

Young people should not only be present in conversations about nutrition- they should be actively shaping decisions, policies, and solutions.

Real youth engagement means:
• Participating in policy consultations and dialogues
• Contributing to program design and implementation
• Ensuring youth voices are heard, respected, and acted upon.

Young people are not just beneficiaries of nutrition programs.

They are partners in building stronger nutrition systems.
