NOA PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO VICE CHANCELLOR OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, KWARA STATE
The President of Nigerian, Optometric Association Dr.Anderson Chimeziri and his team accompanied the Registrar of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria(ODORBN), Dr.Obinna Awiaka to pay a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor(VC), of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN on Thursday, 10th August 2023 at his office.
The Registrar who had previously visited the VC as NOA President introduced the new NOA President to the University community while thanking the University management for the interest shown in Optometry training and respect given to the regulatory body, ODORBN.
He encouraged the University management to keep up with the pace of advancements made in order to ensure the University remains on top in the rating of Optometry Schools in Nigeria and beyond.
The NOA President in his speech, threw more light on the various advancements made in Optometry profession as well as the subspecialties in Optometry.
He enlightened University principal officers on the new trends in Optometry practice and emphasized the non invasive nature of Optometry services in taking care of eye problems.
"Ortho-k and myopilux are new methods of combating and preventing visual impairment by Optometrists," The NOA President said.
He thanked the VC and management of the University for the great work they have done in growing the Optometry Department and called for urgent steps to ensure that all the specialty areas can be developed and accredited in the training.
The NOA President eulogized the pioneer HOD of UNILORIN Optometry Department , Prof Matthew Oriowo and described him as an astute academia and researcher of international repute who was NOA National
Secretary in 1991 before venturing into Optometry job opportunities abroad .
The VC said he was pleased to have the team and said Optometry was dear to his heart. He acknowledged that many initial challenges have been overcome and Optometry is in its own customised building. He requested the ODORBN to increase the quota of admission given to the University to enable them train more ODs to meet the vast need in the North Central part of Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor praised Prof. Oriowo for his contribution to Optometry with reference to the impact he had made in the growth of the profession in other countries.
Others Optometrists present during the visit, were the National Secretary of NOA, Dr. Victor Aliche and
Dr Uwaoma Daniel, the Senior Technical Adviser to the ODORBN Registrar. While
from the university management team were; University Registrar, University Librarian,
University Bursar, University Director of Academic Planning and University Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences.
The President of NOA presented the Communique of the 2023 Conference and other souvenirs to the Vice Chancellor and pleasantries were duly exchanged.
