Edo State Marks World Contraceptive Day 2026

The Edo State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices (MSIN) and Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), commemorated the 2026 World Contraceptive Day (observed annually on 26th September).

The commemoration was conducted across Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba-Okha and Ovia North-East LGAs through community engagement, with six inreaches and one outreach held at:

1. Aruogba PHC
2. New Era PHC
3. PPFN Hospital
4. Ogbeson Community (Outreach)
5. Iwogban PHC
6. Oluku PHC
7. Evbuotubu PHC

The activities were aimed at improving awareness on family planning, correcting myths and misconceptions about contraception, and increasing uptake of modern family planning methods.

In addition to free family planning counselling and services, other free medical services provided included cervical cancer screening, HIV testing, Hepatitis B testing, malaria testing, and blood pressure checks for clients.

Day 1 to day 4 (11th - 14th August, 2026) Social and behavior change (SBC)/Community engagement activities on M-Pox outbreak and other priority diseases/Vaccination Campaign.
Morning and evening sensitization sessions on Mpox outbreak and other diseases were conducted, including vaccination, at Okomu Oil Palm Company, Ovia South West LGA, Edo State. PrEP & PEP medications were also discussed, including designated health facilities across some LGAs where people can get the drugs for free.
In attendance were the State Team - State Epidemiologist & State Health Promotion Officer, alongside the LGA/Rapid Response Team and healthcare workers from Okomu clinic.
