PHCTC UNTH Enugu Graduates 2025 Set in Grand Ceremony

The Primary Health Care Tutors Course (PHCTC), University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, on Thursday, 13th August 2026, held the graduation and send-forth ceremony for the 2025 set at Imoke Hall, UNTH Enugu Old Site.

The event had in attendance distinguished personalities including the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Obinna Onodugo represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Charles Nonyelu; Director of Administration, Mrs. Uche Obi; National President, Association of Primary Health Care Educators of Nigeria, Alhaji Uba Abdullahi; Chairman of the Occasion, High Chief Dr. Onyekaozulu Anih; Head, Department of Community Medicine, Prof. Chinyere Ojiugo Mbachu; Acting Coordinator, PHCTC, Mrs. Ugwu Chidimma Goodness; and other dignitaries.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Occasion, High Chief Dr. Onyekaozulu Anih, encouraged the graduates to continually strive for excellence. He urged them to leverage their training to advance health education and improve healthcare delivery across the country.

The Acting Coordinator, Mrs. Ugwu Chidimma, described the occasion as “a celebration of resilience, academic excellence, and professional transformation.” She commended the graduates for their dedication and perseverance throughout the programme.

Speaking on behalf of the CMD, Dr. Charles Nonyelu congratulated the graduands and charged them to put their training into practice. He also assured them that their request for an improved learning environment would receive prompt attention.

In his goodwill message, the National President of APHCEN, Alhaji Uba Abdullahi, urged the new tutors to practice strictly in line with their professional licenses and ethics.

Highlights of the ceremony included a welcome song, presentation of awards, presentation of certificates to the graduands, and oath-taking. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Acting Coordinator, Mrs. Ugwu.

The 2025 set of PHCTC graduates are expected to serve as tutors and health educators in various primary healthcare institutions across Nigeria.

NCDC DG VISITS UNTH, INSPECTS PROJECTS

The Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Jide Idris, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, paid a working visit to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu, UNTH, to inspect the Isolation Centre and Molecular Laboratory in the hospital in preparation for formal handover.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, spoke through the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Charles Emeka. Nonyelu welcomed the DG and his team to the hospital. He thanked the NCDC for siting the projects in UNTH, noting that the hospital plays a vital role in the control, prevention, and management of infectious diseases in the Southeast.

Dr. Idris, in his address, said that the current federal government of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has taken health as a top priority among his agenda and is fully committed to the health security of all Nigerians.

He went further to say that the federal government is committed to completing the abandoned projects, stating their strategic importance in the Southeast Zone.

He encouraged every hand to be on deck, especially the Enugu State Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, to facilitate proper risk assessment because of the mobility of people across Africa to ensure that epidemics like Ebola do not enter the state. He further warned of the prevalence of Lassa fever, yellow fever, Mpox, Dengue fever, among others, and the need for adequate preparedness to curb any outbreak in the State.

The School of Health Information Management (SHIM), University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu, on Saturday, August 8, 2026, held its annual matriculation ceremony of its new students and induction of set 2023 graduands at the Old Site of the hospital.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, was represented at the occasion by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (C-MAC), Dr. Charles Emeka Nonyelu.

In his address on the occasion, Dr. Nonyelu advised the matriculants and the graduands to be committed to hard work and be resilient in the pursuit of their dreams.
He charged them to know that they are one of the integral parts of the hospital in the management of patients' information.
He encouraged them to individually keep abreast of the changes in digitalization and uphold the ethics, compassion, and confidentiality in handling patients. According to him, this will make patients and other health professionals regard them with high esteem.

The Enugu State Chapter of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) visited the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu, to pay a courtesy call on the Management.

The event took place on the 6th of August, 2026, in the Chief Medical Director's office.

The team, which was led by the State Chairman of the Association, Mrs. Fidelia Udeonu, was received by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Obinna Onodugo. Other members of the executive include Ms. Chioma Stella, Financial Secretary, and Mr. Okwor Kevin Nick, the Treasurer.

Receiving the ANAN State Executives, the Chief Medical Director, expressed the Management's optimism and willingness to foster a cordial relationship with the members, describing their functions in the hospital as very vital, and promised to support them.

The State Chairman of ANAN, Mrs. Udeonu, expressed her delight to the Chief Medical Director for his warm reception, stressing that the aim of their visit was to brief him on their forthcoming Mandatory Continue Professional Development (MCPD) program scheduled to hold in Enugu from 17th to 19th August 2026. She also used the opportunity to thank him for his promise to assist the Chapter during their program.

Other members of Management present at the event are the C-MAC, Dr. Charles Emeka Nonyelu; the D-CMAC (Theatre and In-Patient Services), Dr. Augustine Duke Onyeabochukwu.

As part of activities marking the inaugural Faculty Day at the ASCAF, the Faculty of Radiation and Clinical Oncologists of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH).

The delegation was led by the Faculty Chairman, Prof. A. A. Adenikpekun, and included the Faculty Secretary, Prof. Anthonia Sowunmi; the Faculty Treasurer, Dr. Rasaq Oyesegun; and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairperson, Dr. Nwamaka Lasebikan.

The Chief Medical Director warmly received the delegation and expressed his appreciation for the visit. He commended the Faculty for organizing the inaugural Faculty Day and acknowledged the importance of Radiation and Clinical Oncology in advancing cancer care, postgraduate medical education, and research in Nigeria. He wished the Faculty a successful and impactful celebration, while reaffirming UNTH's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote excellence in healthcare delivery and professional development.

As a highlight of the visit, the Faculty presented a commemorative gift to the CMD as a token of appreciation for his unwavering support and commitment to the growth of postgraduate medical education.

The accreditation team from the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku/Ozalla, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, on Monday, August 3, 2026, as part of the accreditation exercise for the Department of Emergency Medicine.

The accreditation team was led by Dr. Oluwole Olaomi, Chairman. Other members included Dr. Nana Madugu, Secretary, and Dr. Kehinde Ojifinni, Member.

In his welcome address, the CMD spoke highly of the Department of Emergency Medicine. He commended the Head of the Department, Prof. Tagbo Oguonu, and his team for their passion, empathy, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to duty. He noted that despite the challenges posed by limited resources, the hospital has continued to provide effective and timely emergency care to patients.

Speaking on behalf of the accreditation team, Dr. Olaomi expressed appreciation for the efforts of the hospital management and the Department of Emergency Medicine in the delivery of quality emergency healthcare services. The team acknowledged the department's dedication to patient care and its commitment to maintaining high standards in emergency medicine.

The visit forms part of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria's accreditation process aimed at assessing and strengthening Postgraduate Medical training in the specialty of Emergency Medicine.

Also present at the courtesy visit were the C-MAC, Dr. Charles Nnoyelu, DA, Mrs. Uche Obi, DFA, Mr. Emma Okolo and other management staff.

On Monday, 28 July 2026, the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, held a one-day Risk Management training for frontline and other healthcare staff.

The session equipped participants with practical skills to identify, prevent, and manage common hospital risks, including infection control, biological hazards, waste management, workplace violence, and fire safety.

Key topics included:
Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)

Biological hazards & immunization

Healthcare waste management (color-coded bags & safety boxes)

Workplace violence prevention & response

Fire prevention, extinguisher use & emergency response (with Enugu State Fire & Rescue Service)

Chief Medical Director, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, reaffirmed Management’s commitment to high safety standards and continued support for initiatives that protect both patients and staff.

The training concluded with the presentation of fire balls to hospital leadership and the issuance of certificates, as Quality Manager & Chairman, Risk Management Committee, Assoc. Prof. Salome Ezeofor, urged participants to “step down” the knowledge across all departments.
