*Uric Acid tablets* are medicines used to manage *high uric acid levels* in the blood. High uric acid can cause gout and kidney stones.
There are 3 main types of "uric acid tablets". The exact use depends on which one your doctor prescribed:
*1. Tablets that LOWER uric acid production*
*Examples: Allopurinol, Febuxostat*
*Uses:*
1. *Prevent gout attacks* - for people with frequent gout
2. *Treat chronic gout* - to keep uric acid < 6.0 mg/dL long-term
3. *Prevent kidney stones* - uric acid stones
4. *High uric acid from cancer treatment* - called tumor lysis syndrome
*2. Tablets that HELP KIDNEYS REMOVE uric acid*
*Example: Probenecid*
*Uses:*
1. *Chronic gout* - when kidneys don’t excrete enough uric acid
2. *High uric acid with normal kidney function*
*3. Tablets for ACUTE GOUT ATTACK / INFLAMMATION*
*Examples: Colchicine, NSAIDs like Celebrex, Diclofenac*
*Uses:*
1. *Stop a gout flare* - severe joint pain, swelling, redness
2. *Reduce inflammation* during an attack
3. *Prevent gout flare* when starting Allopurinol/Febuxostat
*Other related tablets*
*Urinary alkalinizers: Potassium Citrate*
*Uses:*
1. *Dissolve uric acid kidney stones*
2. *Make urine less acidic* to prevent stone formation

*Key points to remember*
- *They don’t work instantly* - Allopurinol/Febuxostat take weeks to months to lower uric acid
- *You may still get gout flares* in the first few months of treatment
- *Lifestyle matters too*: Drink water, reduce red meat, organ meats, alcohol, and sugary drinks
- *Need regular blood tests* to monitor uric acid, kidney and liver function
⚠️ *This is general info*. The right tablet + dose depends on your uric acid level, kidney function, and medical history. Only take what a doctor prescribed 🙏
