A disagreement over how to cook chicken at a barbecue in Detroit allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation, leaving one man dead and another facing a murder charge.

According to the Hazel Park Police Department, 62-year-old Cleo Lawson attended the September 7 barbecue with his sister and her boyfriend, 60-year-old Kenneth Erwin Thomas.

Police say Lawson and Thomas became involved in a dispute over cooking techniques. What began as an argument allegedly escalated, with investigators accusing Lawson of stabbing Thomas.

Officers responded after the incident and attempted to provide medical assistance, but Thomas died from his injuries.

Lawson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was arraigned September 10 and denied bond. Court records indicate he remains in the Oakland County Jail while awaiting a probable cause conference scheduled for September 22.

A disagreement over something as ordinary as preparing food ultimately ended with a family gathering turning into a homicide investigation.

🚨 Florida Woman Charged After Estranged Husband Turns Over Home Surveillance Video

A Florida woman is facing a felony charge after her estranged husband reportedly provided investigators with home surveillance footage that authorities say showed inappropriate conduct involving the family's dog.

Malia Elizabeth Nummerdor, 38, was arrested September 15 in Port Charlotte and charged with sexual activity involving an animal, a second-degree felony. Her bond was set at $35,000.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the investigation began after Nummerdor's estranged husband, Erik Nummerdor, publicly said he had photographs and video related to the case.

He later told detectives that he had installed indoor cameras at the home while trying to determine who was taking money from a coin jar. Investigators say the footage contained evidence they believed supported the allegation and that Erik turned the files over to deputies.

Authorities later questioned Malia about the footage. According to the sheriff's office, she identified herself in the recording but denied that any inappropriate conduct had occurred, telling investigators she had simply been lying with and petting the family's elderly dog.

She subsequently requested an attorney and was arrested.

Sheriff Bill Prummell said the allegations involve conduct that should never be directed toward an animal.

The case is now moving through the court system. Nummerdor is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

⚖️ NICK REINER RETURNS TO COURT AS PROSECUTORS RULE OUT DEATH PENALTY IN PARENTS’ CASE

Stacey Humphreys had been set for lethal injection at 7 p.m. after the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles rejected his request for clemency Tuesday morning.

But several hours later, a court issued a stay of ex*****on.

The order allows Humphreys to have a hearing on whether his case can be considered under Georgia’s Survivor Justice Act, a law that can allow sentencing consideration when a defendant has a documented history of trauma.

Humphreys was convicted of malice murder and sentenced to death in connection with the 2003 killings of Cobb County real estate agents Cyndi Williams, 33, and Lori Brown, 21.

He has spent years on death row, and his scheduled ex*****on would have been Georgia’s first since March 2024.

For now, the ex*****on has been paused while the legal challenge moves forward.

Police say 27-year-old Isaac Kinsey drove through a road closure before crashing. Instead of staying at the scene, investigators say he took a 2-year-old and a 10-month-old into the marsh.

A drone was eventually used to locate them.

Kinsey later told officers he had been drinking, according to police. Authorities also say his driver’s license was already suspended.

He now faces two felony child-abuse charges.

The investigation will determine exactly what happened during the incident, but authorities say the two children were placed in danger while Kinsey was trying to escape.

For more than two years, Deundray Cottrell’s family has lived with questions about what happened to him.

Now, those questions have led to an arrest.

Cottrell, 31, was reported missing on July 4, 2024, after traveling to Birmingham for a family holiday gathering. Two days later, he was found deceased at a property in the city.

On Monday, U.S. Marshals arrested 33-year-old Julian Taylor Morris in Miami as he was preparing to leave on a cruise.

Morris has been charged with murder and is being held without bond while authorities work to return him to Alabama.

Police had reportedly focused on Morris during the long investigation. Cottrell and Morris had been connected through a personal relationship, making the case especially painful for those who knew them.

Investigators say Cottrell’s family also played an important role in helping detectives develop leads, including obtaining neighborhood surveillance footage from the night he disappeared.

His sister, Angelica Harris, described the arrest as an emotional moment after years of waiting for progress.

For Cottrell’s mother, Theresa, the pain has never really gone away. She said she thinks about her son every day.

Cottrell was remembered as a talented entrepreneur, entertainer and marketing professional who was also working toward his doctorate when his life was cut short.

The arrest does not end the case. Morris still faces the court process, and the allegations against him have not been proven in court.

James was married to Emma Wehr.
