5: The Hard Fight 💪

The journey was not easy. There were many setbacks.

Plateaus, festive periods (like Christmas and Sallah), family pressure to “eat more,” and moments of discouragement almost made her quit. Some friends even mocked her efforts.

But Fatima stayed consistent. She joined a women’s fitness group, drank more water, slept better, and focused on strength training. She celebrated non-scale victories - like fitting into old clothes and having more energy.

: The road to weight loss has many obstacles. Discipline and support systems are more important than motivation.

4: The Decision to Change.

Fatima didn’t start with drastic diets. She began with small, sustainable changes.

She consulted a doctor and a nutritionist. She cut down on sugary drinks, reduced her portion sizes of swallow (eba and fufu), and replaced evening snacks with fruits and vegetables. She started walking 30 minutes every evening with her children.

She also addressed her emotions - she realized she was eating when stressed or bored. She began journaling and praying more intentionally.

The first 10kg came off slowly, but it gave her hope.

: Real change starts with small, consistent steps - not extreme diets that you can’t maintain.

3: The Rock Bottom Moment 😢

One painful day, Fatima’s 9-year-old daughter said to her, “Mummy, why are you always tired? I want you to run with me like other mothers.”

That statement broke her completely. 💔

Later that night, Fatima stood in front of the mirror crying. She realized she was slowly killing herself and missing precious moments with her family. She decided - enough was enough. She was going to fight for her life.

: Sometimes rock bottom becomes the strongest foundation for change. A single emotional moment can spark real transformation.

2: The Heavy Price of Obesity 💔

Fatima’s weight brought many silent battles. She developed painful knees and back pain that made walking difficult. Climbing stairs left her breathless. Her doctor diagnosed her with high blood pressure and pre-diabetes.

She felt tired all the time. Playing with her children became exhausting. Intimacy with her husband suffered because she felt ashamed of her body. Depression quietly set in - she would cry in the bathroom after family gatherings.

Worst of all was the social stigma. Some relatives made jokes about her size. She stopped attending certain events because of the shame.

: Obesity is not just about appearance. It affects your joints, heart, hormones, mental health, and relationships.

Overcoming Obesity After Years of Struggle

1: The Beginning of the Struggle 😔

Let me tell you the story of Fatima Yusuf, a 38-year-old mother of three from Abaji.

Fatima was once a slim and energetic young lady. But after her wedding, pregnancy, and the demands of motherhood, the weight slowly crept in. Family pressure to “eat well for the baby,” late-night eating of pounded yam and egusi soup, and a sedentary office job made things worse.

By age 32, she had crossed 100kg. By 36, she reached 128kg. She avoided mirrors, hated taking photos, and stopped wearing fitted clothes. People called her “Aunty Fatima” with love, but she felt invisible and unattractive.

She tried many things - slimming teas, “30 days challenges,” and expensive weight loss products - but nothing worked for long.

: Obesity often starts gradually with small daily habits. It’s never just about food - it’s about lifestyle, emotions, and environment.

The Story of a Young Man Who Overcame Su***de Thoughts

6: My New Life (Final Part)

Today, at 28, I am still here - stronger, wiser, and more alive.

I kept my job but changed my lifestyle. I now volunteer with a youth mental health group in Lagos, sharing my story to help others. I speak openly about depression because I know how silence almost killed me.

To anyone reading this who is having suicidal thoughts:
Please stay. Your life matters. The pain you feel today will not last forever. Reach out to someone. Call a helpline. See a professional. God is not done with you yet.

You are stronger than you think, and brighter days are coming.

: Suicidal thoughts do not define you. With help, support, and time, you can overcome them. Never suffer in silence.

If this story touched you, share it.

5: The Slow Road to Healing.

Healing was not magic. It was small daily steps.

I committed to therapy every week. I started exercising again - morning runs at the stadium. I reduced my social media time and began journaling my thoughts. I reconnected with God, not just for miracles but for peace.

There were bad days when the thoughts returned, but I learned to challenge them. I surrounded myself with positive people and set small goals.

Slowly, the heavy cloud began to lift. I started enjoying small things again - eating jollof rice, laughing with friends, and dreaming about the future.

: Recovery takes time. Be patient with yourself. Celebrate every small victory.
