💘 HISTORY OF VALENTINE'S DAY
Valentine’s Day, celebrated every year on February 14, is known worldwide as a day of love. But its history goes back many centuries and combines Roman tradition, Christian history, and later European romance customs.
1️⃣ Roman Roots – The Festival of Lupercalia
Before Christianity spread across the Roman Empire, Romans celebrated a pagan festival called Lupercalia in mid-February.
It was a fertility festival.
Young men would draw women’s names from a box to pair together during the festival.
It celebrated purification, fertility, and the coming of spring.
Later, as Christianity grew stronger, the Church sought to replace pagan festivals with Christian observances.
2️⃣ Who Was Saint Valentine?
There are several stories about Saint Valentine, but the most popular one says:
He was a priest in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II.
The emperor believed single men made better soldiers, so he banned marriages for young men.
Valentine secretly performed marriages for couples in love.
When discovered, he was imprisoned and later executed on February 14, around 269 AD.
According to legend, before his death, he wrote a letter signed:
“From your Valentine.”
That phrase is still used today.
3️⃣ The Romantic Connection
Valentine’s Day became linked with romance in the Middle Ages, especially in England and France.
The famous English poet Geoffrey Chaucer helped popularize the idea that February 14 was the day birds choose their mates — connecting it with romantic love.
4️⃣ Valentine’s Day in Modern Times
By the 18th and 19th centuries:
People began exchanging handwritten love notes.
Printed Valentine’s cards became popular.
Gifts like flowers, chocolates, and romantic dinners became traditions.
Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide — including in Nigeria — with:
Gifts 🎁
Romantic dinners 🍽️

Expressions of appreciation to loved ones.
💕 MEANING BEYOND ROMANCE
Although often associated with couples, Valentine’s Day is also:

NB:Beyond these, LET AGAPE LOVE LEAD.
