AKS-RAAMP

AKS-RAAMP is a tripartite development project funded by the World Bank, the French Development Agency, and the Akwa Ibom State Government.

The Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project aims to improve rural roads, market infrastructure, and small-span bridges or culverts to enhance living conditions and the general well-being of grassroots people.

Governor Eno demonstrated his commitment to the grassroots by flagging off an 11-kilometer Demonstration Road just 36 days into his administration. The road connects about 7 towns in Ibesikpo Asutan and Nsit Ibom Local Government Areas. AKS-RAAMP as a key component of the state government’s efforts to open up rural communities for development.

To cushion the effects of these infrastructure projects on the people livelihood, the AKS-RAAMP also offers compensation to Project Affected Persons for crops and economic trees, contributing to job creation and improved livelihoods.

DAY 13

DERIVATION FUNDS

There's a constitutional provision to allocate a percentage of the country's monthly oil revenue to oil-producing states. Known as The 13% Derivation Fund, Akwa Ibom state is one of several states eligible for the funds. This helps to compensate the states and help address the impact of the extraction activities.

The state has put these funds to very good use especially in infrastructural development including delivering the Ikot Oku Ikono flyover, longest in the south-south region; the 21- Storey Dakkada Towers, tallest in the region, the best network of modern roads in the region while leading in rural electrification.

This is in addition to running the country's only State-owned Airline and constructing what was termed the most ‘intelligent’ and smartest airport terminal in the region.

AMALGAMATION HOUSE

Another relic of Colonial Nigeria is the Amalgamation House. The very house in which Nigeria was born.

On January 1, 1914, Lord Frederick Lugard, the governor of both the Northern Nigeria Protectorate and the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, signed a document consolidating the two, thereby creating the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria.

The house is a wooden structure with corrugated roofing sheets. The house still contains items used by Lord Lugard in his office including his chair, desk, telephone. The typewriter in his secretary's office.

There's also a picture of Lord Lugard and his wife Flora Shaw who is credited with coining the name Nigeria.

Amalgamation house is located at Ikot Abasi LGA which used to be a major gateway into Nigeria in precolonial times.

NSIKAK MATTHEW

NsikakinamAbasi Anietie Matthew is a football sensation in the Scottish league.

After netting 42 goals in 28 games in the 22/23 season and 34 goals in 31 games in the 23/24 season for his team; Glenvale Whites, Scotland Nsikak is taking the football world by storm.

He won Player of the Year, Top Goal Scorer and numerous other Awards and recognitions from his club and the Scottish League.

Nsikak who will be 15 in December is attracting attention from numberous clubs across Europe. Manchester United will not see him to sign now and redeem their season.

His father who is the President of Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria (AKISAN) Says when the time comes, the choice of playing for Nigeria or Scotland will be entirely up to the lad.

AKWA IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY

Akwa Ibom State Government conceived and founded a state owned University to complement the Federal University of Uyo.

It was born on April 16th 2003 as AKUTECH (Akwa Ibom State University of Technology. However, it became Akwa Ibom State University with the government broadening the scope of the University into a conventional, multi-campus institution in 2010.

The school has Faculties of Engineering, Physical Science, Biological Sciences, Education, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Arts and Management Science. Over 60 faculty members are undergoing AKSU-sponsored postgraduate training in universities in Europe, North America, and Singapore.

JUSTICE EGBERT UDO UDOMA

Sir Egbert Udo Udoma, KBE, one of Nigeria’s founding fathers and top jurists, was born in Akwa Ibom State on June 21, 1917. He went from a humble beginning to become a Supreme Court justice and Uganda’s chief justice from 1963 to 1969. His mum, Adiaha Edem Udo Udoma, a women’s leader (featured on Day 29), and around 400 women in Opobo Division were massacred by colonial troops and police in 1929 during Aba Women's Riot, a protest to end women’s taxation.

Young Udoma attended Methodist College, Uzuakoli, then went to Trinity College, Dublin (TCD) with the backing of the Ibibio Union (featured on Day 28), which he later led. First black African to get PhD in Law from Oxford; knighted by Queen Elizabeth; was a Methodist and Knight of John Wesley. He returned to Nigeria to practice law in the 1940s but was influenced by nationalist ideas.

He served 13 years on Nigeria’s Supreme Court and was a member of the federal House of Representatives for the United National Independence Party and had pushed for the creation of Calabar/Ogoja/Rivers state.
