Gentamicin Injection β What You Must Know
Gentamicin is a powerful antibiotic injection used to treat serious bacterial infections. It belongs to a group of drugs called aminoglycosides.
π¦ What Does It Treat?
Gentamicin is used for strong infections, especially when other antibiotics may not work well:
Blood infections (sepsis)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Lung infections (like pneumonia)
Abdominal infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
π It mainly works against Gram-negative bacteria (very stubborn organisms).
βοΈ How Does It Work?
Gentamicin works by:
Stopping bacteria from producing proteins
This leads to death of the bacteria
π In simple terms: It doesnβt just stop bacteria β it kills them.
How Is It Given?
Given as an injection
Can be:
Intramuscular (IM) β into the muscle
Intravenous (IV) β into the vein (in hospitals)
π It is NOT taken orally because it doesnβt absorb well in the stomach.
β οΈ Important Safety Information
This is where many people make mistakes β listen carefully ππ½
1. Kidney Risk (Nephrotoxicity)
Gentamicin can affect the kidneys
Patients must be monitored, especially:
Elderly
Dehydrated patients
2. Ear Damage (Ototoxicity)
Can cause:
Hearing loss
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Balance problems
π Sometimes this damage can be permanent if not monitored.
3. Not for Self-Medication β
Must be used only under medical supervision
Requires proper monitoring (labs)
β οΈ When to Be Careful
Avoid or use with caution in:
Pregnant women
People with kidney problems
Patients already taking other strong antibiotics
π Drug Interactions
Gentamicin should not be carelessly combined with:
Other kidney-toxic drugs
Strong diuretics (like furosemide)
π This increases the risk of damage.
Gentamicin is very effective but very sensitive
It can save lives in serious infections
But misuse can cause serious harm
