MEMORIZING VERSUS UNDERSTANDING
Memorizing and understanding are two distinct cognitive processes that engage different brain regions and networks.
MENORIZING involves encoding and storing information in long-term memory, often through repetition or rote learning. This process relies heavily on the hippocampus and temporal lobe.
UNDERSTANDING, on the other hand, involves creating connections between new information and existing knowledge, forming meaningful relationships and context. This process engages higher-order thinking, involving areas like the prefrontal cortex, parietal lobe, and default mode network.
To illustrate the difference, Let's consider baking a cake.
Memorizing: You memorize a cake recipe, step by step, without knowing why certain ingredients are used or how they interact. You follow the instructions precisely, measuring ingredients and mixing them as directed, but you don't grasp the underlying chemistry or principles.
Understanding: You understand the chemistry behind baking a cake. You know why certain ingredients (like baking powder or eggs) are essential, how they react with each other, and how temperature and time affect the final product. With this understanding, you can improvise, substitute ingredients, and adjust the recipe to achieve the desired outcome.
In the first scenario, you're relying on memorization to follow a set of steps. In the second, you're using understanding to grasp the underlying principles and apply them creatively.
