RIYOM MASSACRE IN PLATEAU STATE
The Riyom massacre in Plateau State, Nigeria, stands as a grim testament to the escalating violence in the region. On the night of July 14, 2025, armed assailants launched a brutal attack on Tahoss village in Riyom Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of at least 32 individuals, including women, children, and the elderly. Survivors recounted that the attackers, suspected to be Fulani militia, conducted a coordinated assault, setting homes ablaze and targeting residents indiscriminately .
This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence in Riyom LGA. Over a span of 41 days, more than 58 people were killed, 31 injured, and 82 houses destroyed, displacing approximately 15,000 residents. The Plateau State Youth Council has attributed these attacks to Fulani militias and has called for urgent intervention from the federal government to halt the killings.
In response to the July 14 attack, the Plateau State Government condemned the violence and directed security agencies to intensify surveillance and bring the perpetrators to justice. Governor Caleb Mutfwang appealed to affected communities to remain calm and cooperate with security forces.
