🌍 My Journey Into Public Health — From Treating Patients to Transforming Communities
For over eight (8) years, I’ve served in the Primary Health Care (PHC) setting as a Registered Community Health Practitioner (RCHP).
Every day, I waited for patients to walk through the clinic doors some with minor ailments, others with complicated conditions.
Some recovered… others didn’t make it.
Those moments changed me.
I began to ask deeper questions — not just “What disease is this?” but
“Why is this happening in the first place?”
Why are preventable diseases still claiming lives?
Why do some communities keep facing the same health challenges over and over again?
That’s when I found my calling in Public Health.
Public Health is unique because it shifts the focus from treating sickness to preventing it altogether.
It looks beyond the clinic walls into the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the systems that shape our lives.
It doesn’t just ask how to cure, but how to stop disease from occurring and how to empower communities to take control of their health.
💡 What makes Public Health stand out for me:
- It focuses on populations, not just individuals.
- It values prevention over cure.
- It’s interdisciplinary, connecting medicine, data, social science, and policy.
- It works to achieve equity, ensuring health access for all.
- It builds stronger, healthier communities through education and engagement.
My decision to enter this field is not just about gaining knowledge, it’s about understanding the root causes of health problems and creating strategic, lasting solutions.
Because at the end of the day, true success in health care isn’t only when we treat those who fall sick, it’s when we prevent sickness entirely and build communities where people can thrive.
That’s the heart of my journey, and that’s why I’m proud to be part of the Public Health space. 💚
