Are you aware that a large quantity of Oil palm is used in production more than the one we consume in cooking?

Aside from food and cooking, which can be seen as the main use of red palm Oil, it's equally used for:

Cosmetics and Skincare industry. Your soaps, lotions, lipsticks, creams, etc., all contain red palm oil.

Personal Care products, such as your Shampoos, conditioners, body wash, etc, equally contain it.

Pharmaceuticals, in the production of capsules and supplements, use red palm Oil derivatives.

In Animal feed production for fish, livestock, and poultry, they're added for energy.

The oleochemical industry uses oil palm fatty acids as raw materials in making detergents and so on.

Should we talk about food manufacturing, Biofuels energy, industrial lubricants, Traditional medicine, and so on?

Oil palms are the powerhouse of major sectors; hence, the price and high demand will continue to increase.

What other thing do you think it's used for?

THE JOURNEY FROM TINY SEEDS TO HARVEST-READY OIL PALM

Mama Nkechi didn’t just plant trees. She secured her family's well-being.

It started on a rainy Tuesday in Enugu, behind her house in Umulumgbe, Udi. A land agent from Aku, Nsukka, handed Mama Nkechi a nylon bag of oil palm sprouted nuts to keep for him as he passed by her house to check the property.

He had gone to receive the Oil palm sprouted nuts at the Holy Ghost Park before heading to see a land property at Udi.

They looked like nothing. Just thin green spears, each no taller than her thumb, with the wrapped potting nylon that will be used for nursery setup.

"These will feed your grandchildren," the agent said when Mama Nkechi tried to inquire what the tiny nuts were used for.

Mama Nkechi laughed too, but she wrote the date on a piece of cardboard and tied it to the fence: _April 2019_. And went on to request some of it, which Mr. Ezema didn't just give her but explained how to nurture and transplant them perfectly well to her as JOE-T AGRO EMPIRE, who sent the hybrid sprouted nuts, had done to him.

Already farming in the village, Mama Nkechi took action immediately and set up the nursery. For the first 12 months, those seedlings lived under shade. Every morning she watered them, pulled w**ds, and talked to them the way she talked to her chickens. "Grow well, oh." If the sun was too hot, she covered them with palm fronds. If ants came, she chased them. They grew slowly, just a few new leaves. Neighbors asked, "Mama Nkechi, why are you wasting water on grass?" She just smiled.

At exactly one year in the nursery, when the rains returned, the seedlings had matured well and were transplanted. That was the hardest day. Mama Nkechi and her two sons dug holes eight meters apart, all across the 2-acre plot her husband had left her. Each tiny plant went into the ground with compost and prayers.

Mama Nkechi w**ded, applied fertilizer twice a year, and pruned dead leaves. She started harvesting plantain and cocoyam she planted between the young palms.

People in her community would say, "Oil palm takes forever to fruit," based on the local Oil palm that's common in their village, but Mama Nkechi's oil palm plantation shocked them.

After 24 months of transplanting, the Oil palm began to fruit. It was September 2022. She noticed it first: a tight, orange-red bunch hiding under the fronds of the young, tallest Oil palm trees. Then another. Then over ten.

The day her sons cut down the harvest with a long chisel, the whole compound came out. They were speechless at the quantity of oil palm bunches harvested.

The bunches were heavy. Oily. They smelled like earth and promise. They took them to the local mill, where it was processed, and from there moved to the market where she made a big sale and returned home with jerrycans of red palm oil and some bundles of cash.

That night she fried akara in her own oil. The same oil that started as a nut.

Since then, every 2 weeks there’s something to harvest. The trees will keep producing for 45 years. The oil goes to market, to soap makers, to her sister’s restaurant. The sons use the income for school fees.

From that tiny sprouted nut to a bagged seedling to a tree dripping with fruits in 3 years+ of proper maintenance and believing in a future you can’t see yet. It’s longer than a secondary school education.

But it’s more rewarding than most people realize too. Because once those palms start, they don’t stop. They feed a family, pay school fees, build a house, getting more land for expansion, and so on.

Mama Nkechi still has that cardboard sign. It’s faded now. Under the date, she added another line last month: _First oil: September 2022. Next planting: August 2026._

What kind of journey are you thinking about with oil palm?
